Virtual Book Talk: Abolition and Social Work
September 18, 2024 - 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM ET
Join a virtual discussion with the editors of Haymarket Book's popular new title Abolition and Social Work: Possibilities, Paradoxes, and the Practice of Community Care, hosted by University of Michigan students, staff, and faculty. This book is "a critical anthology exploring the debates, conundrums, and promising practices around abolition and social work in academia and within impacted communities. Within social work—a profession that has often been complicit in the building and sustaining of the carceral state—abolitionist thinking, movement-building, and radical praxis are shifting the field."
The book's editors, Mimi E. Kim, Cameron W. Rasmussen, and Durrell M. Washington, Sr., share how they came to publish this important text and explore whether and how abolitionist principles and politics can be incorporated into social work. Throughout the chapters, the book invites readers to consider whether it is possible for social work to bolster the work of abolition, the tensions and paradoxes with abolition given the social work profession's legacies and trajectories, and examples of social work praxis rooted in abolitionist principles.
As abolitionist organizer, educator, and curator Mariame Kaba writes in the foreword, "The promise of social work is often a carceral promise. The state and its representatives look to social workers when cops seem too violent or too expensive—when they need "someone else" to call or "somewhere else" to incarcerate people. Ida Wells-Barnett, though, and the contributors to this book, show that social work can do more than just tape some cushions to the bars. It can work to pull them down."

Exploring Racial Justice Through Immersive Virtual Reality: The 1,000 Cut JourneyAchieving racial justice requires more than intellectual understanding; it demands a profound, visceral grasp of racism that engages both the mind and the body. The 1,000 Cut Journey offers a groundbreaking approach through its Immersive Virtual Reality (IVR) experience, where participants step into the life of Michael Sterling, a Black male character, and navigate the pervasive challenges of racism across childhood, adolescence, and adulthood, within various settings such as the classroom, neighborhood, and workplace.
Designed with white, liberal audiences in mind, the 1,000 Cut Journey merges empirical and theoretical research on multidimensional racism with an immersive narrative. This innovative approach seeks to foster a deeper connection and in turn, enhanced competence and more genuine engagement with racial issues.
In this talk, Dr. Cogburn, co-creator of the 1,000 Cut Journey alongside Jeremy Bailenson from the Stanford University Virtual Human Interaction Lab, will delve into the transdisciplinary process behind creating this IVR experience. She will present initial findings from empirical research conducted with white, graduate-level social work students and discuss the broader implications of these findings. Additionally, Dr. Cogburn will explore future directions for integrating emerging technologies into social science research to further advance our understanding of race and racism.
Join us to discover how immersive technology can transform perspectives and contribute to the ongoing quest for racial justice.
About The PresenterDr. Courtney D. Cogburn is a tenured Associate Professor at Columbia University School of Social Work and a faculty member at the Columbia Population Research Center. Her research employs a transdisciplinary approach to enhance the understanding and measurement of racism, with a particular focus on its impact on racial health inequities. Dr. Cogburn investigates how media and technology can be leveraged to combat racism and address health inequities.

Community Conversation: Increasing the Sense of Belonging at the School of Social Work
September 30, 2024 - 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM ET
We invite you to a Community Conversation around Increasing the Sense of Belonging at the School of Social Work on Monday, September 30, 2024, from 12 pm- 1 pm.
A Sense of Belonging- the subjective feeling of deep conversation with social groups, physical places, and individual and collective experiences- is a fundamental human need that predicts numerous mental, physical, social, economic, and behavioral outcomes. This is a time for conversation – to share feelings, raise concerns, and talk together as a school community. To aid the conversation, space will be limited. (We know it's coming up soon, so if you miss it, don't fear! If there is a lot of interest in this topic, we can hold another session soon.)
About the FormatWith these smaller Community Conversations, our hope is to explore restorative dialogue and build community, creating a space where we are all teachers and learners. We will draw heavily on practices from intergroup dialogue and restorative justice.

Writing Op-Eds: In-Person Workshop
October 2, 2024 - 12:30 PM to 2:00 PM ET
Add your social justice voice to the political conversation. Or get a jump on a course assignment. Or do both.
Join Writing Skills Coordinator Betsy Williams for an interactive in-person writing workshop on Writing Op-Eds.
We will start with a brief presentation covering audience and purpose, and the content and shape of an op-ed. Next, we will break into small groups to brainstorm ideas and provide feedback on drafts.
Bring what you have: ideas, a title, an outline, a draft. If you have a draft or outline, please bring at least two printed copies for peer feedback. If you just want an overview of op-eds, you are absolutely invited, and can choose whether to stay for the brainstorming session. (But we hope you will leave inspired to add your voice to the public conversation.)
All members of the SSW community are welcome. Feel free to bring your lunch - and some ice cream from the Global Social Work Poster Fair.

Community Conversation: Supporting People Experiencing Intimate Partner Violence
October 16, 2024 - 7:30 PM to 8:30 PM ET
We invite you to a Community Conversation around Supporting People in Our Lives Who Are Experiencing Intimate Partner Violence on October 16, 2024
More than 1 in 3 women and over 1 in 4 men experience intimate partner violence at some time during their lifetime. Due to the prevalence of intimate partner violence, we are likely to have friends, colleagues and relatives who disclose a current or past experience of intimate partner violence. In honor of Domestic Violence Violence Awareness month, let’s come together to discuss how we can support the survivors in our lives.
This is a time for conversation – to share feelings, raise concerns, and talk together as a school community. To aid the conversation, space will be limited. (We know it's coming up soon, so if you miss it, don't fear! If there is a lot of interest in this topic, we can hold another session soon.)
About the format. With these smaller Community Conversations, our hope is to explore restorative dialogue and build community, creating a space where we are all teachers and learners. We will draw heavily on practices from intergroup dialogue and restorative justice.

Community Conversation: Post Election Reflections & Finding our Path Forward
November 6, 2024 - 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM ET
The election is just around the corner! We may or may not know the outcome by the day after the election, but no matter where things stand, we anticipate that people may want to come together to talk.
Election results can bring out a full range of emotions. We invite participants to share their feelings and experiences while fostering empathy and understanding. We’ll also explore how we can move forward, and find healing and common ground in our professions and communities, no matter the outcome. This is a time for open dialogue – to express feelings, raise concerns, and find support as a community.
About the FormatWith these smaller Community Conversations, our goal is to create a restorative space where we can share experiences and learn from one another. The discussion will be guided by practices from intergroup dialogue and restorative justice.
We look forward to seeing you there!Address: Online -

Curtis Center Health Equity Seminar | Perinatal Mental Health Equity: Research and Policies Relevant to Social Work
November 14, 2024 - 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM ET
Presenter Karen Tabb Dina, PhD, MSWDr. Tabb Dina’s research agenda addresses inequities in perinatal mental health outcomes impacting parents and infants across the population, clinic, and community levels. She is one of the foremost international experts on perinatal patient engagement, perinatal mental health, racial disparities, and social determinants in maternal and child health. She regularly speaks for invited medical grand rounds, continuing education seminars, conference plenaries, with policy leaders, and as invited keynote nationally and internationally. As an investigator her research has been continuously funded since 2013 through support from the National Institutes of Health, the Patient Centered Research Outcomes Institute, the State of Illinois Department of Human Services, and several gifts and foundations. She makes regular media appearances—including InStyle Magazine, The Washington Post, and NPR’s All Things Considered to name a few. She serves as an Elected Board Member for the National Association of Perinatal Social Workers.
DescriptionPerinatal mental health is gaining recognition as a key antecedent of adverse maternal and child outcomes as the United States experiences a maternal mortality and morbidity crisis. Recent policy efforts have attempted to mitigate adverse outcomes through legislation and extending access to care with postpartum coverage through Medicaid expansion. Even with progress, perinatal mental health policy continues to grapple with a basic truth: The United States lacks an overarching health care system capable of meeting the mental health care needs of perinatal people and their families.? Moreover, the burden of undiagnosed and untreated perinatal mental health challenges remains greatest among racially minoritized populations, such as Black, Asian, and multiracial people. A broader understanding of perinatal mental health is needed, grounded in the tenets of reproductive justice. Drawing from the reproductive justice framework and the NAPSW code of ethics, this talk will articulate specific policies to meet perinatal mental health challenges and promote thriving for birthing people and their families.
Learning ObjectiveParticipants will be able to describe perinatal mental health challenges in the United States, list one associated outcome, and list one strategy to address perinatal mental health from a social work perspective.
Agenda1:00 - 1:15pm | The prevalence of perinatal mental health problems in minority and rural populations and complications related to untreated perinatal mental health problems
1:15 - 1:45pm | How to assess mental health challenges, with strategies for addressing perinatal mental health disparities in clinics, as well as in communities and through policy interventions
1:45 - 2:00pm | Key summaries & conclusion, followed by moderated Q&A

Community Conversation - Aging within our Current Society
February 11, 2025 - 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM ET
We invite you to a Community Conversation about Aging within our Current Society.
At our conversation, we'll consider questions like what is expected of us as we age? How are we perceived by others, and does it change as we age? Is it impacted by our status? Our income? What expectations does society seem to hold about the worth of a person as we age?
This is a time for conversation – to share feelings, raise concerns, and talk together as a school community.
About the format. With these smaller Community Conversations, our hope is to explore restorative dialogue and build community, creating a space where we are all teachers and learners. We will draw heavily on practices from intergroup dialogue and restorative justice.

Community Conversation: Domestic Violence & the Course System
February 24, 2025 - 6:30 PM to 7:30 PM ET
We invite you to a community conversation around domestic violence in the court system with special guest Dr. Daniel G. Saunders on February 24, 2025 at 6:30 pm.
We are trying out a unique format in which a guest speaker will present a 10 minute mini-lecture on the topic prior to our conversation. Additionally, students, staff and faculty from both the School of Social Work and the Law School are invited to attend.
Survivors of domestic abuse are often forced to co-parent with their abusers, experiencing continued abuse. A study led by Dr. Saunders found that judges, lawyers and litigators often have limited formal education around domestic violence abuse patterns. This often causes them to fail at intervening to prevent continued abuse.
Dr. Saunders will be joining us for a ten minute presentation about advocating for change in the family court system before we begin our conversation. Dr. Saunders is a Professor Emeritus within the School of Social Work who focuses on dating and domestic violence.
This is a time for conversation – to share feelings, raise concerns, and talk together as a school community. To aid the conversation, space will be limited. (We know it's coming up soon, so if you miss it, don't fear! If there is a lot of interest in this topic, we can hold another session soon.)Address: Online -

Key highlights include an overview of the EBP application process, eligibility criteria, and the importance of aligning field tasks with the nine core social work competencies as required by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). The informational session stresses that field placements are educational experiences distinct from regular job duties and require additional planning and consideration, particularly in separating employment tasks from learning objectives. Students are encouraged to assess their current workplace dynamics before applying and to identify suitable MSW field instructors with at least two years of postgraduate experience. The session covers potential implications of changes in employment status and offers guidance on negotiating potential challenges associated with integrating field education with workplace responsibilities. Detailed application steps are reviewed, from initial communication with our office to securing approvals and completing legal affiliations (when necessary) with the university.
By the end of the session, students are equipped with the knowledge to decide whether an EBP is the right path for their educational and professional development.

April 18, 2025 - 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM ET
We invite you to a Community Conversation around the ethics of AI on April 18th from 11am-12pm EST.
As generated by ChatGPT: "AI is rapidly transforming academia, offering tools like predictive analytics and virtual support to enhance services and decision-making. While these technologies can improve efficiency and access, they also raise ethical concerns around bias, privacy, and the role of human connection. This discussion invites us to consider both the potential and the responsibility of using AI in ways that align with social work’s core values."
This is a time for conversation – to share feelings, raise concerns, and talk together as a school community.
About the FormatWith these smaller Community Conversations, our goal is to create a restorative space where we can share experiences and learn from one another. The discussion will be guided by practices from intergroup dialogue and restorative justice.

Community Conversations Training
May 20, 2025 - 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM ET
We invite you to become a Community Conversations facilitator! We extend this opportunity to all SSW staff, students, and faculty.
There will be a two-session Community Conversations facilitator training, held on Zoom on May 20th and May 27th from 5-7 pm EST. Both sessions are required, along with pre-work to be completed before the first session on May 20th. The training will equip you with intergroup and restorative dialogue skills, which include a strong anti-racist history and deeply embed PODS into their structure and approach. These skills are applicable in micro-, mezzo-, and macro- social work practice and help to develop all of the nine social work competencies.
Community Conversations bring us together in dialogues in which we are all teachers and learners, and which help create an environment of compassion, understanding, and change. These conversations help us to broaden our perspectives and to discover collective meaning. Please note that those trained through this program are expected to make a modest commitment to facilitate at least one conversation per semester and help collectively generate conversation topic ideas.
Please reach out anytime before then if you have any questions.
