Welcome LGBTQIA2S+ Students

The Office of Field Education extends a warm welcome to our Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Questioning/Queer, Intersex, Asexual, and Two Spirit (LGBTQIA2S+) students. The University of Michigan has a nondiscrimination policy, which includes a commitment to inclusivity. The School of Social Work extends this policy to fieldwork sites through an agreement with U-M SSW stating they will “support the assignment of students without discrimination.” The Office of Field Education is  committed to cultivating a sense of belonging and support where LGBTQIA2S+ students can thrive in their field education experience.

Out in Field

Deciding whether to share your identities is a choice made by each individual, and our faculty are ready to support you in this process. There is no concern too small for queer students to bring to the field office, we want to know your needs and make your experience as positive as possible.

UM-SSW Field Faculty and the Director of Field Education, want to hear from all students who may have questions or concerns about:

  • Navigating the LGBTQAI2S+ identity through the field placement process
  • The experience of being LGBTQIA2S+ in your field placement
  • Experiences of heterosexism, homophobia, or transphobia within a fieldwork setting
  • Support for disclosure of sexual orientation and gender identity at your field placement
