Our programs and courses are designed to support continuing education for social work professionals. Our courses generally provide opportunities for individuals at the beginning, intermediate or advanced levels to benefit from the courses being offered. When advanced level skills are needed we will indicate this in the course description. Since the target audience for many of our programs and courses are SSW field instructors who are LMSWs and graduates of MSW programs, the majority of the courses offered meet the needs of professionals at the beginning or intermediate levels or advanced levels.
The University of Michigan is approved as a provider for social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) through the Approved Continuing Education (ACE) Program. The University of Michigan, provider #1212, maintains responsibility for the program. ASWB Approval Period: 5/15/2017 to 5/15/2020. Social workers should contact their regulatory board to determine course approval for continuing education credits.
*The licensure preparation program and materials associated with it were not included in the Association of Social Work Boards' Approved Continuing Education (ACE) review and are not approved by ASWB for continuing education nor endorsed by ASWB in any manner.
The University of Michigan School of Social Work (provider #MICEC-0003) is an approved provider with the Michigan Social Work Continuing Education Collaborative.
The Social Work Consultant is a licensed master's social worker in good standing and is a member of the Michigan Social Work Continuing Education Collaborative. Through her involvement with the Collaborative, she stays informed of state licensure requirements and gap areas for CE programs. She reviews course content to ensure that the appropriate level is indicated. Offerings are developed to meet the licensure requirements for social workers primarily at the post-MSW level and can also be appropriate for BSWs with experience in the identified area of study. Offerings meet the licensure requirements because they are evidence-informed, skill-focused and address social work knowledge and professional development needs. The CE hours earned are based on state and ASWB ACE guidelines.
In order to complete the course/program, participants are required to attend all sessions, complete course assignments and posttests, and complete all course & program evaluations.
While the attendance expectation is that you attend all live sessions of the course/program, we do understand that unexpected events may at times interfere with your attending a particular session. You need to contact the course instructor or certificate director if you find that you have missed a session or will be missing a session. We do record each live session but we do not record the interactive group discussions. The course instructor/certificate director will discuss with you alternatives for securing the missed content and time. If during the course of the course/program it is noted that you have missed more than 20% of the live sessions and no alternative plan is in place for the missed sessions, the program completion certificate will not be awarded. You will get the CEUs that you have earned based on your attendance.
Certificate programs and some workshops have assignments. Assignments can include recommended readings, capstone projects or presentations, and post test questions. At the end of all programs and courses, participants are required to complete an evaluation.
If a program/course has posttests, a participant is required to achieve a passing score of 80% or higher on the post test questions and may take the test an infinite number of times.
A link to the program/course evaluation will be sent to the participant via email within 30 days of completing the program/course. Participants have 60 days to complete the evaluation, after which they will no longer be able to complete the evaluation and receive their certificate.
Some email servers may detect the evaluation email as spam, so please check your spam folder if you haven't received it. If you have not received the evaluation within 30 days of the course, please contact our office at email@example.com and we will assist you.
The Office of Continuing Education does not allow participants to complete evaluations for CE sessions occurring greater than 60 days prior.
After completing the course/program evaluation, participants will emailed a link giving them access to their online social work CEU certificate. Please save and/or print your certificate upon receipt for your records.
If you think you need an accommodation for a disability, please contact firstname.lastname@example.org or 734.763.5723 at your earliest convenience. Some aspects of this course/certificate program may be modified to facilitate your participation and progress. As soon as we are aware of your needs, we can work on accommodations. Any information you provide is private and confidential and will be treated as such.
If you have a concern about the course, number of CEUs awarded, or other any other issue related to the CE program, then you should email your concern to email@example.com. If we are unable to resolve your issue, The Continuing Education Program Director, Mary Ruffolo, Ph.D., LMSW will contact you to find out more about the concern and help to resolve any remaining issues. If this resolution is not agreed to, the final step is to present your concerns to the Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs who oversees the program. The decision of the Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs is final. No additional action will be taken.

For Certificate Programs, written notification of cancellation must be received two weeks prior to the first certificate session to obtain a refund ($50.00 administrative fee will be retained). Refunds after that date will not be made, though you may transfer your paid registration to another individual prior to the start of the program.
To request a refund for all other courses, participants must contact firstname.lastname@example.org. We must receive a written statement via email in order to confirm all cancellations. You will receive an email confirming your cancellation. Retain your cancellation confirmation to allow for a refund to be processed. A 100% refund will be issued for cancellations received at least 5 business days prior to the start of a program. No refund will be issued for cancellations received less than 5 business days prior to the start of a program.
The Office of Continuing Education reserves the right to cancel a program and will make every effort to notify registrants as quickly as possible. In these situations, a complete refund will be provided.
If your fees were paid with a method other than a credit card (check, money order, electronic check, bank wire, etc.), and you are eligible to receive a refund, please allow up to 60 days from the date of cancellation for a refund to be issued via check.
If your registration fees were paid online by credit card and you are eligible to receive a refund, your fees will be refunded to the same credit card used for payment. Allow 10 business days from the date of cancellation for the refund to post.
Field instructors to U-M SSW MSW students are able to take workshops and mini-courses through the Office of Continuing Education at no charge, compliments of the Office of Field Instruction. The fee waiver is available to any field instructor who currently has one of our students placed with them, and applies for up to one calendar year following their last active student placement.
The Office of Continuing Education and the Office of Field Instruction reserve the right to deny the field instructor fee waiver to field instructors who consistently no-show for courses without cancelling their registration through the Office of Continuing Education. Due to the limited number of spaces available in courses, please try to cancel your registration at least 5 business days before the program start date so we have time to contact people on the waitlist.
Field instructors may be actively registered for up to two mini-courses at a time and may take up to three mini-courses in a calendar year.
