Curtis Center Program Evaluation Group

Program Evaluation Group

Established in September 2011, the Program Evaluation Group at the University of Michigan School of Social Work engages the community to provide professional evaluation services while matching students' educational goals with projects.

Our mission is to train and professionally prepare students and recent social work graduates in program evaluation by providing comprehensive evaluation services to a broad range of community-based agencies.

We provide our clients with services such as needs/capacity assessments, process evaluations, outcome evaluation, and impact evaluations. We evaluate programs in areas such as:

  • Child Welfare
  • Higher Education
  • Criminal Justice
  • Integrated/Behavioral Health
  • Social Policy
  • Aging
  • Community Development

Our Approach

Program Evaluation is the use of rigorous research and evaluation methods to help organizations articulate their programs, define performance metrics, and measure outcomes.

Our Center uses a utilization-focused approach to evaluation. We engage our clients throughout the entire evaluation process to insure that the evaluation is driven by their needs. We will facilitate the use of results by the organization to develop and improve their programming. Our utilization-focused evaluation practices often include:

  • Involving multiple stakeholders throughout the evaluation process
  • Convening an evaluation steering committee
  • Utilizing data visualization best practices
  • Facilitating data interpretation meetings

As Social Work evaluators, our professional Social Work ethics are at the core of our work. We build our work on the National Association of Social Workers Code of Ethics and the American Evaluation Association's Guiding Principles. We pride ourselves on our commitment to understanding and assisting organizations in meeting their organizational goals and providing the best services possible to their clients. As Social Workers, we bring to the evaluation our standards as well as our understanding of community-based organizations and programs, systems-level thinking, and cultural humility.
