Michigan Title IV-E Child Welfare Fellowship

The Title IV-E Child Welfare Fellowship is an opportunity to provide additional resources and support to students committed to working in the Child Welfare System - Children’s Protective Services, Foster Care, Licensing and Adoption. The aim of this program is to recruit, retain and educate students to be leaders in the field of child welfare. The fellowship includes requirements for course work and field education. Additionally, fellows will receive a stipend. Students will be contractually obligated to search for and accept employment in public, private, or tribal child welfare agencies in the State of Michigan upon graduation.

Title IV-E Child Welfare Fellowship Funding

• 60 Credit MSW Students - $5000 per semester up to 4 semesters
• 45 Credit MSW or Dual Degree Students - $5000 per semester up to 3 semesters

Specialized Courses

Title IV-E Child Welfare Fellows must complete the following course work:

• SW 627 - Child Welfare Systems

• SW 621 - Assessment of Children, Youth & Families

• SW 624 - Child Maltreatment Assessment and Treatment

Specialized Fieldwork:

Title IV-E fellows will have the unique opportunity to select from specifically designated field sites. Field placements must qualify as public, private, or tribal child welfare agencies in the State of Michigan. These case management roles, specific to child welfare, are designed to support children and families within systems such as foster care, foster care licensing, foster care management, adoptions, and child protective services. 

Program Requirements:

Title IV-E Child Welfare Fellows may be enrolled in full-time or part-time programs. Students must be U.S. citizens, U.S. permanent residents, DACA status or eligible noncitizens to participate in the fellowship.

Title IV-E fellows must agree to the following:

• Complete all necessary coursework

• Complete their field placement at a public, private, or tribal child welfare agency in the State of Michigan

• Be employed in an approved position at a public, private, or tribal child welfare agency in the State of Michigan for the minimum payback period, upon graduation

I. Pathway

Select and complete one of the following pathways and all related pathway course requirements:

• Interpersonal Practice in Integrated Health, Mental Health, and Substance Abuse
• Management & Leadership
• Welfare of Children & Families

II. Required specialized courses

• SW 627 - Child Welfare Systems

• SW 621 - Assessment of Children, Youth & Families

• SW 624 - Child Maltreatment Assessment and Treatment

III. Field Placements

Title IV-E Child Welfare Fellows must complete their field placement at a public, private, or tribal child welfare agency in the State of Michigan

Due to course and field requirements for the Title IV-E Child Welfare Fellowship Program, MSW/MPH students are not eligible to participate in this program.

Title IV-E Child Welfare Fellows can participate in any program length, with the exception of the 20-month schedule and Masters International program.

Your MSW application must be completed by the scholarship deadline.

The Title IV-E Child Welfare Fellowship is a unique opportunity and differs from the Child Welfare Scholars program. Students are able to participate in either or both if accepted. Please review the Child Welfare Scholars page for more information.
