Online MSW FAQ

Admissions

  1. Are the admission requirements the same for the Online MSW Program as the On-Campus MSW Program?

    The admissions criteria are the same for both programs, however, students who enter through the MasterTrack or MicroMaster certificate programs, U-M Sociology and Social Work students, and UM Dearborn Human Services and Social Work students must satisfy additional admission requirements.

  2. How many Online MSW students will be in a cohort every semester?

    We anticipate 30 Online MSW students per semester.

  3. When should advanced standing students apply to the Online MSW Program?

    Advanced standing students should apply for the earliest date possible based upon the semester they are hoping to enter the Online MSW Program. Deadline information can be found here.

  4. When should UM Dearborn Human Services and Social Work students apply to the Online MSW Program?

    UM Dearborn Human Services and Social Work students should apply by March 1st of their junior year. More details are available here.

  5. When should undergraduate U-M Sociology and Social Work students apply to the Online MSW Program?

Costs

  1. What is the cost of the Online MSW program?

    Students in the Online MSW Program will have 45 credits remaining for the MSW degree, which is equivalent to 3 semesters of full time tuition cost. Tuition costs vary based upon whether a student is a Michigan resident or non-resident. Tuition estimates can be found here. If a student enters through the MasterTrack or MicroMasters MSW Program they will have additional cost for the certificate.

Curriculum

  1. Are Online MSW Program courses synchronous or asynchronous?

    Courses in the online program are both synchronous and asynchronous. Students will have about 2 hours per week of synchronous content which equals to approximately 1 hour each week for each course. Each course will have approximately 2 hours a week of asynchronous work.

  2. Are there any in person meetings on campus if I am completing the MSW program online?

    Yes, all students will spend a long weekend in Ann Arbor, MI to start the program and complete an Introduction to Social Work course. If travel is not possible due to COVID-19, an online option for completing this course will be offered. Students will also be invited to participate in the graduation ceremony at the end of the program, but this is not required.
