The admissions criteria are the same for both programs, however, students who enter through the MasterTrack or MicroMaster certificate programs, U-M Sociology and Social Work students, and UM Dearborn Human Services and Social Work students must satisfy additional admission requirements.
We anticipate approximately 60 Online MSW students per semester.
Advanced standing students should apply for the earliest date possible based upon the semester they are hoping to enter the Online MSW Program. Deadline information can be found here.
UM Dearborn Human Services and Social Work students should apply by February 1st of their junior year. More details are available here.
U-M Sociology and Social Work students should apply by March 1st of their junior year. More details are available here.
Students in the Online MSW Program will have 45 credits remaining for the MSW degree, which is equivalent to 3 semesters of full time tuition cost. Tuition costs vary based upon whether a student is a Michigan resident or non-resident. Tuition estimates can be found here. If a student enters through the MasterTrack or MicroMasters MSW Program they will have additional cost for the certificate.
Courses in the online program are both synchronous and asynchronous. Per online course each week, students should expect 2 hours of synchronous live course sessions, and around 6.5 hours of asynchronous content (for example: assignments, readings, mini-lectures, videos, discussion boards).
No, online students are not required to come to Ann Arbor. Online students are able to enroll in an on-campus course if they are able to attend in-person. Online students are also invited to participate in the in-person graduation ceremony upon completion of the MSW degree. An online streaming option is also available for commencement.
