Online MSW FAQ


Curriculum

  1. Are Online MSW Program courses synchronous or asynchronous?

    Courses in the online program are both synchronous and asynchronous. Per online course each week, students should expect 2 hours of synchronous live course sessions, and around 6.5 hours of asynchronous content (for example: assignments, readings, mini-lectures, videos, discussion boards).

  2. Are there any in person meetings on campus if I am completing the MSW program online?

    Yes, all students will spend a long weekend in Ann Arbor, MI to start the program and complete an Introduction to Social Work course. Due to COVID-19, online students starting in May 2021 will complete their orientation weekend virtually. Students will also be invited to participate in the in-person graduation ceremony at the end of completing the program, but this is not required.

  3. As an online student would I be able to pursue the School Social Work Certificate?

    No, the School Social Work Certificate will not be offered in the Online MSW Program and is only available in our On-Campus MSW Program.

  4. Can students choose any pathway in the Online Program?

    Students completing the Online MSW Program must follow the Interpersonal Practice in Integrated Health, Mental Health, and Substance Abuse Pathway. Additional pathways may be added to the Online Program in the future.

  5. Do you anticipate adding additional pathways to your online MSW program in the future?

    Yes! The next addition will be a more macro-focused pathway.

  6. How many credits do online students take each semester?

    Online students enroll in 5-7 credits each semester for 7 semesters to complete the 45-credit degree program. This includes credits for field placement hours.

  7. What times will online courses be offered?

    Online MSW courses will be offered primarily during evenings (EST) during the week. Students living outside of the Eastern Time Zone will need to make accommodations to attend courses during their listed times.
