Sex Therapy & Sexuality Education

The dual track certificate in Sex Therapy & Sexuality Education is designed for the professional who would benefit from both clinical and educator training. Qualified professionals for this track would include professionals who hold mental health licenses in their states or provinces and provide counseling, therapy, and education. They will have completed graduate school for clinical training in their professional area and worked for at least one year. This may be a PhD, MD, MSW, Masters in MFT, or MA. Sex therapists report using the educational training to expand their group offerings or teach in local community centers or other venues. Throughout the program you will:

  • attend 13 classes
    • 3 four-day sessions at the University of Michigan School of Social Work
    • 2 two-day sessions at the University of Michigan School of Social Work
  • 5 classes offered web-based learning
  • have the opportunity to earn 195 ACE (social work) CEUs, 195 CMEs,and 195 AASECT CEUs

Sexual Attitude Reassessment (SAR)

Advanced Training In Sexuality Counseling And Therapy (ATSCT)

ATSCT 1 - Techniques of Sex-Related Assessment, Diagnosis, and Treatment of the Psychosexual Disorders in the Current DSM IV-TR

  • Application of models in different settings
  • Principles of interdisciplinary consultation, collaboration, and referral
  • Ethics in the provision of counseling and therapy in sexual health
  • Sexual health interviewing and taking a sexual history in different settings
  • Assessment and brief treatment strategies following Psychosexual Disorders in the DSM IV-TR

ATSCT 2 - Theory and Methods of Sex-Related Counseling and Psychotherapy - Couple and Individual Approaches

  • Theory and methods of approach to intervention in relationship systems experiencing sex and intimacy problems, integration of sexuality counseling/sex therapy and couples therapy
