  6. Circle Process Event Focusing on the SSW Climate

    November 14, 2017 - 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM ET

You are invited to join a Circle Process event for SSW Community Members. The purpose of the Circle is to share thoughts and ideas in a guided dialog about the School of Social Work climate and to have all voices be heard.  The Office of Student Conflict Resolution will be coordinating multiple small-group Circle Processes to happen concurrently during this event.  Associate Professor Sandra Momper will introduce us to this important practice. Circle Processes are a time-honored tradition practiced by Indigenous peoples globally, which through process and structure promote equality, inclusivity, and deep listening. We also hope to collect some of the main takeaways from these Circles to inform building a positive climate in the School.

This is the first of many actions that the School will take over this and future semesters to build a positive culture in the School. We will engage students, faculty, and staff in reviewing what we learn from these Circles. With your input and ideas, the School will be planning future events focusing on climate, training, and other community-building activities.

Come at 6 PM to enjoy a light dinner before the event.

  7. Spectrum of Advocacy and Activism Symposium: Finding Your Voice

    November 15, 2017 - 8:30 AM to 7:30 PM ET

CEW is leading a one-day Spectrum of Advocacy and Activism Symposium focused on advocacy and activism training. This event will demonstrate how a person’s activism can change over time, how advocacy is tied to a person’s context and situational power, and how partnering with diverse perspectives can strengthen advocacy and activism efforts. "Health outcomes" has been selected as the theme for this year’s symposium because of increasing uncertainty surrounding healthcare in America, including coverage for women’s health care (mental health, mammograms, birth control, maternity care, etc.). The symposium will include presentations by local and national advocacy experts who have taken varied approaches to advocacy in ways that best leverage their current context (power, privilege, and identity). Find more information here.

  9. Teaching Support: Continuing Instructor Education

    November 15, 2017 - 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM ET

This fall, the SSW is hosting a regular series of support activities around teaching. These have been designed as a result of requests from faculty.

In recent months, The UM Ann Arbor community has witnessed multiple incidents of hate speech and racist acts. Such incidents reflect a disturbing national trend: a 2016 article in Inside Higher Education referred to “an epidemic of racist incidents at campuses across the country.” These events, and the community’s responses to them, shape the conditions under which students learn and instructors teach. As social workers and instructors, how do we decide whether and how to address such incidents in our classrooms? This workshop provides an opportunity for us to consider multiple methods for engaging with students about campus incidents of hate speech and violence and to reflect on the affordances and challenges of each approach.

These sessions are available to all course instructors. A schedule of dates and events is below.
