  2. Fall 2013 Community Service Day #6: UMHS Child Care Center

    August 27, 2013 - 8:00 AM to 1:30 PM ET

    Sign up for one of the Community Service Day sites by calling the Office of Student Services at (734) 936-0961 by August 16th, 2013. Sites will be filled on a first come, first served basis.

    This event will depart from the School of Social Work at the time listed. Transportation will be provided.

    Organization Mission: The mission of the Child Care Center is to provide quality early childhood care for the children of parents working at the University of Michigan Health System. The program is designed to meet the needs of infant, toddler, and preschool children in a safe, nurturing, and inclusive environment. The Center's goal is to strengthen the bridge between UM employees' work and family life by creating a special place that supports them both.

    Project Description: Volunteers will work with the early childhood program for children ages birth through five. At the site there will be a variety of projects including cleaning, organizing, and playing with kids! Water will be provided.

  3. Fall 2013 Community Service Day #3: Dawn Farm

    August 27, 2013 - 8:00 AM to 2:30 PM ET

    Sign up for one of the Community Service Day sites by calling the Office of Student Services at (734) 936-0961 by August 16th, 2013. Sites will be filled on a first come, first served basis.

    This event will depart from the School of Social Work at the time listed. Transportation will be provided.

    Organization Mission: Dawn Farm's mission is to help individuals who struggle with addictions and/or alcoholism find recovery. They identify and remove barriers that prevent those recovering from addiction and/or alcoholism from joining the recovery community.

    Project Description: After receiving a presentation on the Dawn Farm organization, volunteers will be given a tour of the premises by two current clients. Volunteers will then have the opportunity to work in gardens and with animals on the farm. Water will be provided.

  4. Fall 2013 New Student Orientation: Community Service Day

    Community Service Day (part of the Fall New Student Orientation) is a fun and exciting way to meet and bond with your MSW cohort and current students. The Community Service day is optional, however it is highly recommended.

  5. Fall 2013 Community Service Day #1: Hannan Foundation's Village of Woodbridge Manor

    August 27, 2013 - 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM ET

    Organization Mission: Hannan's mission is to enhance the quality of life for senior citizens in Metropolitan Detroit - with a focus on the City of Detroit - by identifying their unmet physical, social and financial needs, maintaining facilities, and creating programs that both address these needs and preserve the dignity of seniors.

    Project Description: Students will have the opportunity to help Woodbridge Manor residents by cleaning living spaces, walkways, dining areas, and the exercise room. Volunteers may also assist with painting and clerical tasks. Water will be provided.

    Organization Mission: The mission of the James and Grace Lee Boggs School is to nurture creative, critical thinkers who are empowered to contribute to the well-being of their communities. The Boggs Educational Center is fulfilling its goals by implementing a Place-Based Education (PBE) curriculum. PBE immerses students in local heritage, cultures, landscapes, opportunities and experiences, using these as a foundation for the study of language arts, mathematics, social studies, science and other subjects across the curriculum. PBE emphasizes learning through participation in service projects for the school and local community. The James and Grace Lee Boggs School will be opening its doors on September 3, 2013.

    Project Description: The James and Grace Lee Boggs School is opening its doors this fall and needs volunteers to paint, plant flowers, set up classrooms, mow the lawns, and clean up around the school building in the neighborhood. Water will be provided.

  7. Fall 2013 Community Service Day #5: Guidance Center: Kids-TALK Children's Advocacy Center

    August 27, 2013 - 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM ET

    Organization Mission: Kids-TALK Children's Advocacy Center (CAC) is a community-based program that serves children through 17 years of age, providing comprehensive treatment to suspected child victims of sexual abuse, physical abuse, neglect, or other forms of psychological trauma.

    Project Description: Students will help clean and sort donations, clean and organize the current medical facility to convert it into a usable office space, prepare invitations for our annual Grape Expectations Wine Tasting fundraiser, and assist with a project that will be a visual representation of the number of children that we serve here at Kids-TALK CAC. Water will be provided.

    Project Description: This tour of Detroit, led by Linda Yellin, MSW, will highlight the city's rich history, local movements, challenges, and current progress being made. Portions of the tour will be on foot. Water will be provided.

  9. Fall 2013 Community Service Day #4: Boulevard House and Gleaners Community Food Bank

    August 27, 2013 - 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM ET

    Organization Mission: Boulevard House is a 21st century campus-community settlement house in Detroit that opened its doors in 2012. The Boulevard House works to create place-based residential space for campus community collaborative work in the southwest Detroit neighborhoods of Hubbard-Richard and Hubbard Farms.
    Gleaners Community Food Bank has been "nourishing communities by feeding hungry people" for over 35 years. Last year, Gleaners distributed 46 million pounds of emergency food to more than 550 partner soup kitchens, shelters and pantries in Wayne, Oakland, Macomb, Livingston, and Monroe counties. They work to alleviate hunger by providing the equivalent of more than 100,000 meals per day to people who otherwise cannot afford the food they need.

    Project Description: At the Boulevard House, students will assist with the enhancement of the physical structure of the facility. There will be opportunities to paint, garden, and conduct demolition work. Students will also be canvassing the neighborhood distributing information packages about programs at the Boulevard House and interacting with Detroit based service providers and community organizers who will discuss strategies and actions to support residents during this time of Detroit's transformation. At Gleaners Community Food Bank, students will have the opportunity to learn about how Gleaner's helps to provide food for families in Metro Detroit while packing food boxes, sorting food items/canned goods, and assisting with agency food orders. Water will be provided.
