Traveling Innovation Hour: School of Social Work and School of Education
September 15, 2017 - 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM ET
Join us for Traveling Innovation Hour, a gathering co-hosted by the Office of Academic Innovation two times per month featuring a different theme and campus location each session.
Traveling Innovation Hours are informal discussions in which participants discuss a topic or open question related to teaching and learning in higher education that is particularly relevant to the host programs.
This Traveling Innovation Hour will focus on local teaching and learning concerns of U-M's School of Social Work and School of Education. Faculty, staff, and students of these schools are especially welcome to attend. Katie Richards-Schuster (SSW) and Don Peurach (SOE) will facilitate a conversation on the following question: What does high quality teaching and learning look like in a digital environment?
How might we use digital tools to address the educational needs of our practitioners and engage more deeply with the community? What does effective online learning look like for fields like social work or education, in which personal relationships and face-to-face interactions are so core to practice? What challenges do social workers and educators encounter when designing or implementing new tools or practices, and how might we confront such challenges? We look forward to hearing your thoughts!
All are welcome to attend. Please register to help us plan for refreshments. Registration is not required for attendance.

Dan Robin: Master Talk
September 18, 2017 - 12:00 PM to 1:30 PM ET
A social entrepreneur's approach to reducing the unemployment rate for people with disabilities
How the role of social work can close the gap. Despite representing 20% of the population, the unemployment rate for people with disabilities (PWD) has gone virtually unchanged for 40 years, remaining at twice that when compared to people without disabilities. This talk will seek to understand where policies, systems, organizations, funding, and advocates have fallen short while highlighting the common denominators within models necessary for the next stage of evolution. The ability of social workers to maintain a duality, i.e. creating a culture of caring and service across both their clients and industry is imperative. Closing the gap requires social workers to build on their strengths by identifying and negotiating needs between 'supply' (PWD) and 'demand' (Industry).

Language Interpretation in Social Work Practice
September 22, 2017 - 8:30 AM to 2:00 PM ET
This professional development workshop will help students and professional social workers learn and appreciate the role of language in social work practice. All social workers, monolingual and multilingual alike, perform the role of language interpreter (and/or translator) in practice. Ensuring diversity, equity and inclusion (DE&I) in practice calls for methods, philosophies, and tools that can allow us to build relationships across class, gender, immigration status, sexuality, language and race. Interpretation- facilitating communication across lines that might otherwise divide communities is essential to working towards our commitment to DE&I. Participants will learn methods and strategies for interpretation with special attention to the potential for power imbalances that influence the way in which communication is mediated through an interpreter.
