A social entrepreneur's approach to reducing the unemployment rate for people with disabilities

How the role of social work can close the gap. Despite representing 20% of the population, the unemployment rate for people with disabilities (PWD) has gone virtually unchanged for 40 years, remaining at twice that when compared to people without disabilities. This talk will seek to understand where policies, systems, organizations, funding, and advocates have fallen short while highlighting the common denominators within models necessary for the next stage of evolution. The ability of social workers to maintain a duality, i.e. creating a culture of caring and service across both their clients and industry is imperative. Closing the gap requires social workers to build on their strengths by identifying and negotiating needs between 'supply' (PWD) and 'demand' (Industry).
