Professor Edie Kieffer was accepted into the 2016 U-M Center for Healthcare Research & Transformation (CHRT) Policy Fellowship Program.
Assistant Director of Global Activities Katie Lopez, Assistant Professor Reuben Miller and LEO Adjunct Lecturer Shari-Robinson-Lynk will receive recognition from the University of Michigan's Council on Global Engagement during International Education Week (November 16 - 20). Each of these faculty members was nominated by a student who said they had a positive impact on their global education experience - here in Ann Arbor or abroad.
SSW will be honored with two Pride of CASE V Awards, which recognize institutions and individuals who demonstrate outstanding achievement in the concept and execution of advancement programs and communications, at a ceremony in Chicago in early December. SSW received a silver award for Best View Book and a silver award for Excellence in a Series for the MSW recruitment materials.
Larry E. Davis, MSW'73, PhD'77, authored the book, "Why Are They Angry With Us? Essays on Race." Davis is dean of the University of Pittsburgh School of Social Work, where he is the Donald M. Henderson Professor. He is the director and founder of the Center on Race and Social Problems, which conducts applied social science research on race, ethnicity, and color. Drawing on both his personal and professional experiences, Davis attacks the core of many commonly held attitudes which contribute to racism in America. He received the 2014 SSW Distinguished Alumni Award and is a member of the Dean's Advisory Committee.
Three School of Social Work alumni were presented Distinguished Alumni Awards at the SSW All Class Reunion Lunch on Friday, October 9, 2015.
The Distinguished Alumni Award recognizes School of Social Work alumni whose achievements exemplify the values of the School of Social Work and who have made an exceptional impact on the profession, the community and/or Social Work education.
Professor Michael Spencer was selected to be inducted as a fellow of the American Academy of Social Work and Social Welfare. He is one of fourteen fellows chosen this year by the Academy.
Associate Professor Luke Shaefer was invited to give testimony on welfare and poverty in America at the U.S. Senate Committee on Finance public hearing on October 29.
The Committee on Finance concerns itself with matters associated with taxation and other income standards, especially those related to insular possessions. It is considered to be one of the most powerful committees in Congress.
Professor John Tropman received the "Lifetime Achievement Award" from the Association for Community Organization and Social Administration at the 2015 Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) meeting.
Professor Daniel Saunders, Professor Emerita Kathleen Faller, and Professor Richard Tolman’s article, “Beliefs and Recommendations Regarding Child Custody and Visitation in Cases Involving Domestic Violence: A Comparison of Professionals in Different Roles” was published in Violence Against Women.
Associate Professor Karen Staller received the Distinguished Faculty Governance Award. The Distinguished Faculty Governance Award was established by the Senate Advisory Committee on University Affairs in 1986 and is funded by the Alumni Association. The criterion for the award is distinguished service to faculty governance over several years with an emphasis on university wide service.
