The Joint PhD program does not accept transfer students or credits to the program unless a student comes directly from one of the five departments aligned with the Social Work and Social Science PhD. Students wishing to join the Joint PhD program from one of the five social sciences must go through the application process just as any other student applying to the program.
Yes. If you are accepted into the Joint PhD Program, you will earn your MSW degree in the process of completing your PhD.
No. Unlike the Joint Program, to apply and be accepted into the Social Work and Social Welfare program you must already have your MSW degree.
We recommend that each participant reviews the program schedule and requirements and registers themself individually. Whoever is organizing the group and/or providing payment for the group should contact the Office of Continuing Education by email to coordinate payment. If you are planning to register a large group, we strongly encourage you to set up a call with the Office of Continuing Education to discuss your interest and needs.
MSW students will solidify their chosen pathway when they begin applying for their field placement in the MSW program.
Students need to enter the MSW program within 2 years of completion of the Social Work Essentials Certificate or the MasterTrack Certificate.
International applicants with a social work or social welfare degree are required to apply as Pre-MSW. Upon offer of admission, the Joint PhD Program will request syllabus information from the degree granting institution for submission to CSWE (Council on Social Work Education). If the MSW degree is equivalent to one earned from an accredited US institution, the admitted student will then be considered Post-MSW.
