This webinar will present research on how foster families, including parents and children, are faring during COVID-19. Given the challenges involving child welfare workers accessing foster families during the pandemic, the current research relied on social media data from Reddit to better understand the most pressing concerns of foster families discuss on online forums during COVID-19. The research will shed light on areas child welfare workers, programs, and policies can intervene to ally some of the challenges foster families experience during this time.

Learning Objectives

Describe the topics most commonly discussed amongst foster parents on Reddit. 

Examine specific contexts in which the topics occurred both for foster parents and children.  

Identify trends in the topics before and after COVID-19 occurred.

In this coffee hour, Ed-Dee Williams, who is a current Ph.D. student at the School of Social Work, will join us and lead a discussion on Black Lives Matter. 

For International Students, context related to U.S. policies and social justice initiatives is difficult to get involved. This time Ed-Dee will give us a brief presentation of what is the Black Lives Matter(BLM) and its impact and future perspectives.

We invite you to a conversation with students about the winter semester.  The School is seeking opportunities to hear from faculty and students about how we can organize our winter semester.  With so much online, how do we connect with one another?  How do we build community?  How do we learn from and with each other as we prepare to be practicing social workers?  We would love to hear your thoughts and ideas.  To aid the conversation, space will be limited.

About the format. A few students and faculty have decided to try something different - smaller community conversations.  Our hope is that this can take topics that lend themselves better to verbal dialogue off of email and into a face-to-face (or screen-to-screen!) environment. We will draw heavily on practices from intergroup dialogue and restorative justice.
