  3. Working with Transitional Age Youth with Behavioral Health Conditions

    October 10, 2020 - 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM ET

    Transitional age youth, defined as the transition period from adolescence to young adulthood, represents a developmental periods characterized by, among other things, increased risk taking and vulnerability for behavioral and mental health conditions. Yet the social work theoretical, empirical and practice literature remain underdeveloped, particularly for transitional age youth with behavioral health and mental health conditions. Social work practitioners and researchers alike play an essential role in ameliorating behavioral health conditions among transitional age youth. This course focuses on the state of the science when working with transitional age youth with behavioral health conditions. Students in this course will acquire a general understanding of (1) the prevalence and variations of behavioral health conditions among this overlooked and vulnerable population, (2) etiological factors associated with behavioral health conditions, (3) theoretical frameworks to inform practice with transitional age...

    Educational Agreement due for review by 5:00 PM. This deadline is only applicable to continuing field students, who started their field placement prior to Fall 2020. 

    Please Note: Students starting field in Fall 2020 under Pathways will be using our new Educational Agreement, which will have a different deadline schedule that will be communicated via Canvas.

  8. Fedele F. and Iris M. Fauri Memorial Conference: Part 1: Enduring Challenges and Emerging Concerns in Child Welfare Policy and Practice Associated with the COVID-19 Pandemic

    This session will focus on how current circumstances of the COVID pandemic are serving to expose and heighten enduring concerns about gaps in child welfare services. Panelists will speak about the ways child welfare systems have been impacted by the pandemic—and how they have responded during a time of unprecedented fear and need. Additionally, panelists will share their perspectives on the immediate and long-term implications for child welfare services.

  10. Get Out the Vote SSW: ENGAGE Get Out the Vote SSW: ENGAGE

    October 15, 2020 - 12:00 PM ET

    With our power, resources, and knowledge - what can we do to make sure everyone’s voice is heard when practicing the right to vote? How can we become more empowered and informed about voting, and actively join the fight against voter suppression?  This session will focus on both School of Social Work and university-wide voter engagement initiatives such as Get Out The Vote (GOTV) efforts, and include student discussion on how we can become more engaged in the upcoming election. Clinical Assistant Professor and candidate for Washtenaw County Commissioner Justin Hodge will share his work on promoting voting.  Ginsberg Center Lead of Democratic Engagement Erin Byrnes will discuss her work with the U-M Big Ten Voting Challenge and how students can get more involved in the upcoming election. Sumaiya Ahmed Sheikh, the Michigan State Coordinator of the Campus Vote Project will also be joining us. This session counts for field credit.
