  1. CASC 10 Year Anniversary Celebration CASC 10 Year Anniversary Celebration

    Since 2010, the CASC minor is a space that fosters community among students engaged in social change and provides course work and experiences aimed at helping students deepen their understanding of what it means to be a change agent. Join us in celebration of the 10-year anniversary of the minor, and the community that shape the direction, work, voice, and vision for the future.

    The 10-year anniversary celebration will highlight the history of the minor, commemorate alumni, and lift up the work of current students committed to social change, in diverse contexts. The program will feature presentations and performances by alumni, and highlight reflections and community focused initiatives led by students in the minor.  

    The program will conclude with a roll out of the Community Art Installation, designed by CASC students and alumni to commemorate the vision of the minor, and honor the role of activism, social movements, and core principles of community-based action.

    We look forward to celebrating the CASC 10 year anniversary with the broader campus community, and invite your participation in this exciting occasion.

  2. Trans Visibility Passport Day

    The U-M Spectrum Center and the School of Social Work Office of Global Activities are collaborating to host Trans Visibility Passport Day. During this event, the Washtenaw County Clerk's office will assist students and community members to apply for, renew, or change their passport. 

    Currently, you can obtain a ten-year passport with an updated gender marker if you have had clinical treatment determined by your doctor to be appropriate in your case, to facilitate gender transition. No specific details are required about the appropriate treatment to have an updated gender marker on your passport.

    The cost of a passport is:

    Regular Passport Book $110 (will take 4-6 weeks to receive the passport)

    Expedited Passport Book $170 (will take 2-3 weeks to receive the passport)

    A passport card is an additional $30

    There is a separate processing fee of $35 applicable to all passport applications

    Please be aware that all payments must be made on the day of the event. Payments for the passport book or card must be payable to the U.S. Department of State. Payments for the processing fee must be payable to Washtenaw County Clerk. All payments MUST be a check or a money order. Counter checks are not allowed.

    Financial support may be available for students applying for a passport who are requesting name or gender maker change. Please send a message to ssw.oga@umich.edu to request more information

  4. Teletherapy: Start it up! Guidance for Social Workers

    This webinar is designed to support social workers, who, as a result of COVID-19, may be practicing telehealth/teletherapy for the first time. This webinar is also relevant to social workers with some experience in telehealth who may be interested in learning more about the ethical provision of clinical services online.

    The session will cover the definition and history of teletherapy, benefits and drawbacks of teletherapy for both providers and clients, and legal and ethical concerns, with specific attention to ethical considerations during COVID-19.

  7. SSW Book Club

    The SSW Book Club will meet via Zoom to discuss a short novel by Louise Erdrich, The Birchbark House.

    This novel for young readers tells a family story of an Ojibwa girl, starting in 1847 near Lake Superior.

    You are welcome to join us, whether or not you have attended before, and whether or not you have finished the book.

  9. ENGAGE Team Virtual Conversation on Volunteer Opportunities During COVID-19

    April 9, 2020 - 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM ET

    The School of Social Work’s ENGAGE Team is hosting virtual discussions for students and the Michigan Social Work community on engaging and assisting during the COVID-19 pandemic. The discussion on April 9 showcases the emergency response work of MSW student and Pastor of the Historic King Solomon Baptist Church in Detroit, Charles E. Williams II. Williams shared other community engagement opportunities in Detroit. The Office of Field Education also will provide guidelines on receiving field credit for volunteer work, and Dominique Crump, MSW '19 will guide students through a meditation and discussion on the importance of self-care.

    In addition, the session will:

    share community volunteer opportunities

    discuss how these activities may count for field credit, and will

    showcase the needs of community and organizational leaders responding to the crisis

    share stories of volunteer experiences

    Note; if you are an MSW student, the hours you volunteer may be counted towards your field hour requirements. Check with your field faculty member and have your volunteer opportunity approved in advance as a supplemental field experience activity.

  10. Virtual Discussion on COVID-19: Identity and Intersectionalities

    For the past two weeks, the Faculty Allies for Diversity (FAD) in collaboration with the Office of Diversity, Inclusion and Equity (DEI), has held social support virtual conversations among those individuals wishing to prevent and stop stigmatization and all issues arising from the COVID-19 pandemic. The April 9 conversation will add a focus on identity and intersectionality.
