Generally speaking, "management" is getting work done through others." Leadership is creating and sustaining change without crisis. This minicourse explores these concepts in the context of community benefit organizations[CBOs](aka, nonprofits). While CBOs are organizations, and thus share a lot of features with other kinds of organisations (corporate, governmental) they have many elements of unique structure and stricture.They tend to work with "wicked problems"; they have a different governance structure from corporate and governmental organizations; they have a strong sense of mission and purpose, which is highly motivating but also can lead to under-investment in infrastructure both hardware (physical plant, etc) and software (employee training and development)...

An idea that originated from now CASC alumni, DECLARE is a two day retreat that will allow you to dive deeply into thinking about your identities, your social justice work, and how you can work to implement change. You can take DECLARE for one credit toward the diversity cluster, or just participate for fun. All students interested in learning more about the retreat can email cascminor@umich.edu.

January 26, 2016 - 4:00 PM to 5:30 PM ET

The candidates for Dean will be giving public presentations when they are on campus for the second round of interviews. Each of the presentations will take place in the ECC from 4 to 5:30 PM and will be followed by an informal reception.  

The dates of these public presentations are:

Candidate A:  Thursday, 1/21

Candidate B:   Tuesday, 1/26

Candidate C:  Thursday, 1/28

Arrangements are also underway for a fourth candidate to visit the campus in early February.

Information about each candidate will be sent out approximately 2 days before their visit. The public presentations will not be live-streamed, but videos of each will be available after the presentation for faculty members, staff, and students who are unable to attend the sessions.

Racialization of the ID Cards

Politics of the photo ID

Geneology of the ID card

Students have shared their experiences with racial microaggressions that occur in the classroom, field, and broader society. Many microaggressions continue to go unaddressed. Participants in this workshop will learn what constitutes racial microaggressions, how to recognize them, power differentials in their interpretation, their effect on the academic success and well-being of Black students, and methods of intervention. Attention will be given to the interest faculty members have in creating safe and inclusive classroom environments. The workshop will be knowledge- and skills-based, including case studies, handouts, role-playing, group discussion/breakouts, and videos.

Objectives:

Participants will recognize racial microaggressions and their potential effects on Black Students.

Participants will explain how to intervene when racial microaggressions occur, either by themselves or by another in the classroom.

Agenda:

12:00-12:15pm: Introduction of the history of the topic
12:15-12:45pm: Understanding racial microaggressions
12:45-1:45pm: Intervening when in the presence of racial microaggressions
1:45-2:00pm: Wrap-up and next steps
