  1. Half-Baked Brown Bag

    April 23, 2024 - 12:00 PM to 1:30 PM ET

Want to know what your colleagues are working on?

Want to help them refine their research ideas?

Want to be more engaged and help build community?

Come to the Half-Baked Brown Bag lunch series.

The associate dean for research is hosting a series for faculty and doctoral students to share their early stage ideas with peers for feedback. Come and contribute to a lively discussion that will benefit the research happening here at the School – it may even help shape how you think about your own work.

The format will include a brief presentation from faculty members or doctoral students about their research. Each presentation will be approximately 15 minutes, followed by a 20-30 minute discussion. There will be two participants for each event.

To keep the discussions more cozy, space is limited to 20 attendees. Pizza and drinks are provided.

  2. Community Conversation - Navigating Divides: Addressing the Clash Between Conservative Views, Faith, Traditions and Modern Day Social Work Values

    April 23, 2024 - 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM ET

Join us for a timely discussion titled "Navigating Divides: Addressing the Clash Between Conservative Views, Faith, Traditions, and Modern Day Social Work Values."

This conversation will focus on the challenges that social workers with conservative beliefs may face in an increasingly progressive field. We will explore how holding traditional religious or conservative views might impact perceptions of fit and effectiveness within the social work profession. This session is an opportunity to discuss the experiences of feeling excluded due to one's beliefs, the potential for bias, and strategies for navigating professional environments that may feel at odds with personal values.

This is a time for conversation – to share feelings and experiences and talk together as a community.

About the format: With these smaller Community Conversations, our hope is to explore restorative dialogue and build community, creating a space where we are all teachers and learners. We will draw heavily on practices from intergroup dialogue and restorative justice.

  8. Where Do I Start? Grant Writing for Beginners

    May 3, 2024 - 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM ET

Non-profits should engage in a diverse funding model. Grants often are a part of a diversified strategy. That said, many non-profits do not have the resources for a dedicated grant writer, therefore these responsibilities fall within other roles. This presentation allows social workers to begin to understand what type of grant funding is available and to learn the first steps required to initiate an application.

Registration for this course is closed. Visit the CE Course Catalog for more offerings.

  9. School of Social Work Spring Commencement

    May 4, 2024 - 1:30 PM ET

The School of Social Work Spring Commencement for Master of Social Work students will be held in person at the Power Center and livestreamed on the SSW website. The Power Center doors will open for guests and graduates starting at 12 Noon. Guests that need accessible/special seating should plan to arrive by 12 Noon and approach an usher for assistance.

A light reception will be held in the Power Center Lobby immediately following commencement.

Out of an abundance of caution the University is requiring that all large campus venues to utilize a Weapons Detection System at the entrance of venues. Our ceremony is being held at The Power Center for the Performing Arts so attendees will need to enter our venue through this system. Guests will move through the same type of system that is used at Michigan Stadium or Crisler arena events.

All attendees will also need to refrain from bringing the prohibited items below. Please note: this list has been updated to include all bags (including purses, clear bags, fanny packs, etc.). If any attendee has a need to bring in an item out of medical necessity or child care needs they may inform the screening staff.

Commencement Parking: The Fletcher street parking structure located at 201 Fletcher Street will be open to the public for parking at no charge. The Thayer street parking structure located at 216 S. Thayer Street will be open to the public for parking at no charge. Handicap parking is available in both structures.
