What am I Thinking? Understanding Personal Values and Beliefs and their Relationship to Cultural Identity and Practice

Note: This training is available for free to MDHHS-affiliated child welfare workers.
This webinar encourages participants to define and identify oppressive ideas and behaviors and their impact on marginalized populations. Participants will work collaboratively to examine individual biases and develop a plan to actively change individual and systematic oppressive actions.
Attendees will participate in lecture and small group discussions to be introduced, develop an increased awareness, and identify methods to disrupt practices of systematic oppression and their outcomes.Registration for this course is closed. Visit the CE Course Catalog for more offerings.

ENGAGE: Poverty doesn't Pause: Housing Insecurity during a Pandemic

Homelessness and housing insecurity is an epidemic in our country, especially among Black and other communities of color. During a pandemic, these individuals end up being our most vulnerable. Linked to so many other systems of oppression, homelessness and housing insecurity is something as social workers that we are obligated to understand. Join us for this special virtual discussion featuring panelists who work on the frontline of Detroit’s housing insecurity to discuss how this issue has been exacerbated during the pandemic. Featured panelists include Lead Mobility Coach of Creating Opportunities to Succeed (COTS), Project Manager and Community Improvement Advisor for Built for Zero Nationals, Amber Elliott; and Courtney Smith, Executive Director of Detroit Phoenix Center.

ENGAGE: Immigrants in Michigan: The Untold Story

Immigrants have made vast contributions to this state - economically, politically, and socially. The fabric of American society was created by the contributions of a diverse range of immigrants. As a nation, however, we continue to suppress and demonize immigrants. This session explores the untold story of immigrants in Michigan, from undocumented and documented populations, to immigration issues and struggles that we, as social workers, are obligated to be knowledgeable about.
Special guests include Executive Director of the Office of Global Michigan; Executive Director of the International Institute, Wojciech Zolnowski; Executive Director and Founder of the African Bureau for Immigrant and Social Affairs, Fatou Seydi-Sarr; and founder of the Washtenaw Immigration Rights Coalition (WIRC), Laura Sanders.

Global Social Work Alumni Panel

Join the Global Social Work Practice Pathway and the Office of Global Activities for an alumni panel focused on global social work careers both in the U.S. and abroad. During the panel, SSW MSW graduates will share information about their current jobs, the job search process, advice they have for current students, and what they are looking forward to in the future. Time will be included for Q&A with the panelists.

Meet the Panelists: Catherine CalvoGrass Roots Development Officer, United Nations Foundation
Washington, DCAs an experienced nonprofit professional, Catherine Calvo (MSW) is dedicated to working alongside individuals and organizations to achieve lasting impact and sustainable change. She currently leads the Grassroots Development portfolio on The United Nations Foundation’s malaria elimination campaign, Nothing But Nets. Prior to joining UNF, Catherine served as a nonprofit fundraising consultant and in various development roles for international development and human rights-focused NGOs including Amnesty International, Grameen America, and WaterAid America. Catherine received her MSW from the University of Michigan in 2017, where her studies focused on social policy, program evaluation, and global social work practice. Her professional and academic endeavors have led her to call Italy, Thailand, and Israel home and have further perpetuated her love of travel, food, and experiencing new cultures.
Esther WhangSpecialist, Global Aftercare, International Justice Mission
Washington, DCEsther Whang (MSW ’06) has worked in international development for the past fifteen years. She currently works at International Justice Mission focusing on scaling aftercare programs at IJM globally to provide trauma-informed services to survivors of violence and abuse. She is responsible for global program indicators and outcomes, curriculum and resource development for systems-strengthening, partnership strategies, and ensuring survivor-centered and survivor-led programming. She previously worked at IJM as the Aftercare Specialist for Southeast Asia and, prior to that, spent nine years working for World Education, Inc., supporting and managing projects across South and Southeast Asia in areas of trafficking prevention, safe migration, education, and livelihood development. Esther is passionate about strengthening government systems and the social service workforce and investing in the capacity building of community-based organization
Josh LeePsychosocial Technical Advisor, SEED Foundation
Irbīl, IraqJosh Lee (MSW) is a clinical social worker with four years of international humanitarian and development experience in Egypt, Indonesia, and Iraq. He is currently the Psychosocial Technical Advisor for SEED Foundation in northern Iraq and works with survivors of violence, including refugees, internally displaced persons, survivors of trafficking, and survivors of gender-based violence. Josh graduated from the University Michigan School of Social Work in 2015 and trained with the Yale Child Study Center's Advanced Clinical Social Work Fellowship and the Veterans Affairs Psychosocial Rehabilitation Fellowship post-graduation.
Océane LangreneySchool Social Worker, Liceo Boston
Bogotá, ColombiaOcéane Langreney (MSW) is a French/American clinical social worker who has been living in Bogotá, Colombia for the past three years. She is currently working as a School Social Worker at an alternative Elementary school. She graduated from the University of Michigan School of Social Work in 2017 and has a history of working within the educational, criminal justice, early intervention and refugee systems. Océane is particularly passionate about child welfare, social-emotional learning and child development.
