Within the contest of restorative justice frameworks, course participants will learn about the school to prison pipeline and implications of zero tolerance policies pushing at-risk students into juvenile and criminal justice systems. Restorative practices aim to increase cultural awareness, practice, and advocacy in practitioners incorporating best practices for social emotional well-being and learning methods with young people in schools and communities.
1. Clearly articulate the problems traditional justice and discipline models present for youth in communities and schools: addressing behavior management, school to prison pipeline, and expulsions.
2. Panel discussion of people who are working in both communities and schools.
3. Teaching skills around restorative practices (conferences and peace circles), conflict management, mediation, and facilitation.
Describe structural contexts for Restorative Justice (RJ) practice (e.g. the school to prison pipeline and zero tolerance policies).
Apply social justice framework on implications of non-restorative practices that push at risk student into juvenile and criminal justice systems.
Identify three principles of RJ practices.
Identify real life practice examples from community panelists about how their work with restorative practices came about, challenges, and benefits/tips for implementation.
Differentiate between conflict management, mediation, and facilitation skills within interpersonal, community, and organizational practices.
Describe the use of restorative justice practices in three settings.
Describe theory and practice of affective questions.
Analyze and discuss case studies about implementation of restorative practices in a school setting.
Identify real life practice examples from school panelists about how their work with restorative practices came about, challenges, and benefits/tips for implementation.
Describe best practices around proactive/responsive uses of circles, conferencing, and peer mediation.
Identify steps for preparing and implementing restorative justice at individual, and group levels in schools (and communities).
Practice skills of mediation and conferencing.
Via role play, apply restorative justice implementation steps on a school and community level.
Develop and share a plan for implementation of restorative justice practices in their social work practice.
