Promise Early Award Scholarship Program

The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of providing financial awards based on learning (via NWEA goal setting and assignment completion), college planning (via program data), and savings (via administrative savings data) on academic achievement (via standardized test scores and grades) and components of identity-based motivation theory (via survey data). The Community Foundation hypothesizes that the early award scholarship program, which employs multiple incentives to build college savings accounts, influences student identity, aspirations, school outcomes, and post-secondary preparedness. Through research, we seek to understand under what conditions and for whom the program is effective, as well as examine the program mechanics and relationship of savings behaviors, assets (529 accounts), incentives, identity and school outcomes.
