    CASC Graduate Kym Leggett Named Dean's Fellow for LSA

    2019 CASC graduate Kym Leggett has been named the 2019-2020 Dean’s Fellow for the U-M College of Literature, Science, and the Arts.  Leggett received her bachelor’s in sociology, a double minor in CASC and music. She also earned the CASC certificate in Poverty Solutions, Action & Engagement.

    Angie Perone Selected as a 2019-2020 NASW/CSWE Social Work HEALS Fellow

    Angie Perone, PhD student, has been selected as a 2019-2020 NASW/CSWE Social Work HEALS Fellow. The fellowship strengthens delivery of health care services in the United States by advancing education and training of health care social workers.

    Andrew Gilroy, MSW student Named a 2019 Pat Tillman Scholar

    Andrew Gilroy, MSW student has been named a 2019 Pat Tillman Scholar. Tillman Scholars have served their country, and are committed to strengthening communities at home and around the world.
    After graduation, Gilroy intends to launch a social enterprise focused on transportation solutions. He desires to connect communities that lack transportation options with improved employment prospects that are otherwise inaccessible.

    Shawna Lee and Joyce Lee's Research Cited in Huffington Post

    Associate Professor Shawna Lee and PhD student Joyce Lee’s research “The effect of paternal cues in prenatal care settings on men’s involvement intentions” is cited in the Huffington Post. Most photos and brochures in a typical OB-GYN waiting room focus on mothers, but adding some subtle father-friendly visual cues could be a simple way to boost a dad’s parenting confidence, according to Shawna Lee and Joyce Lee's new study.

    Hiltz and Mattison Elected to NASW Michigan Board of Directors

    MSW Program Director Barb Hiltz was elected president and Michelle Mattison, MSW student representative of the NASW-Michigan Chapter.

    Nkemka Aniywo Defends Dissertation

    Nkemka Aniywo successful defended her dissertation "'We gon' be alright': Racism, Media, and the Sociopolitical Development of Black Youth." Her committee consisted of Daphne Watkins, Stephanie Rowley (co-chairs), Katie Richards-Schuster and Monique Ward. She has accepted a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania.

    Queer Advocacy Coalition Awarded Student Leadership Award from Spectrum

    The School of Social Work Queer Advocacy Coalition was awarded the Excellence in Student Leadership Award at the Spring 2019 Lavender Graduation. The award recognizes sustained and lasting commitment to LGBTQ communities. Lavender Graduation, sponsored by Spectrum,  is a celebration to honor LGBTQ graduates at U-M.

    Paige Safyer Defends Dissertation

    Paige Safyer defended her dissertation "M(other) Nurture: Exploring the Influence of Maternal Care on the Development of Infant Emotion Processing, Regulation, and the Emotional Brain."  Her committee consisted of Richard Tolman, Brenda Volling (co-chairs), Katherine Rosenblum, Julie Ribaudo and Ioulia Kovelman. She has accepted an Assistant Professor of Social Work position at Arizona State University.

  9. Kathryn Berringer
     
    Kathryn Berringer Awarded Rackham Program Public Scholarship

    Kathryn Berringer, PhD candidate Social Work and Anthropology was awarded a Rackham Program in Public Scholarship. The scholarship supports research projects created in partnership with Rackham students and community organizations.

    Berringer is working with the Ruth Ellis Center in Highland Park to produce a set of multimedia products documenting the history of the center serving LGBTQ youth in metro Detroit. She will be collaborating with the center's Youth Advisory Board.

    Anthony Abshire Selected as Congressional Foster Youth Intern

    Anthony Abshire, MSW candidate, has been selected to serve this summer as a Foster Youth Intern in Washington, D.C. The Foster Youth Internship Program is a summer congressional internship for young adults who have spent time in the foster care system. The program is sponsored by the Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute, which works with the Congressional Coalition on Adoption Caucus.
