Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Can Social Work Essentials/ MasterTrack MSW students apply for loans?

    Yes, Social Work Essentials MSW and MasterTrack MSW students may submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid to apply for federal loans for the terms that they are enrolled at the University of Michigan in the MSW program.

  2. Can students choose any pathway in the Online Program?

    Students completing the Online MSW Program must follow the Interpersonal Practice in Integrated Health, Mental Health, and Substance Abuse Pathway. Additional pathways may be added to the Online Program in the future.

  3. Can students live outside of the United States and complete the Online MSW Program?

    No. It is not possible to complete the entire Online MSW program while living outside of the United States. Students who are U.S. Citizens or who have Permanent Residency status in the U.S. may take courses while outside of the United States, however their field placement hours (credits) must be completed in the United States, not including U.S. territories. Please review the Distance Education Disclosure form for more information.

  4. Can students switch between the Online and On-Campus programs?

    It is strongly recommended that students who are interested in both the on-campus and online program, apply for both the Online Program and the On-Campus programs.

  5. Can the FAST Office or myself pay someone with a physical gift card?

    The FAST Office can not purchase or distribute physical cards.  If you feel a physical gift card would be necessary, you may purchase the card and submit a request for reimbursement. You will still need to have recipients fill out the gift card acknowledgement form.

  6. Can the FAST Office purchase gift cards or do I need to purchase it and submit reimbursement?

    The FAST Office can purchase electronic Visa or Amazon gift cards as tokens of appreciation. Tokens of appreciation are appropriate for someone guest lecturing or participating in an event.

    Gift cards intended for IRB research related compensation must be purchased via HSIP.

  7. Can the Online MSW degree be completed Full-time?

    The online degree is offered as a part-time program. A full-time option will be available beginning fall 2023.

  8. Can undocumented or DACAmented students qualify for in-state tuition at the University of Michigan?

    Yes. Undocumented or DACAmented students may qualify for in-state tuition rates if you can demonstrate that you attended an accredited Michigan high school and accredited Michigan middle or junior high school within 28 months of enrolling at U-M. In state residency is determined by the Registrar's Office. Please see the University of Michigan Guidelines for Qualifying for In-State Tuition for details.
