  1. How long does it take to complete the Online MSW degree?

    The master of social work (MSW) is a 60-credit-hour degree program that can be completed part-time or full-time through one of the curriculum schedules listed below.

  2. How long does it take to earn the MSW degree?

    Some students can complete the MSW program in 12 months (full-time Advanced Standing, MicroMasters MSW, MasterTrack MSW, U-M Sociology & SW, and UM-Dearborn Human Services & SW). Students in our full-time four-term programs complete the program in either 16 months or 20 months. Part-time students have different options. Please visit our Program Length webpage for details.

  3. How long does it take to receive a decision after submitting the eligibility request form?

    Eligibility request forms will be reviewed as soon as possible. Students should receive a decision before the next cohort start date.

  4. How long does it typically take a student to finish the 45 remaining credits to earn the full MSW degree? Both part-time and Full-time?

    For full-time, you would complete the 45 credits in 3 semesters (about a year) on-campus or online. Part-time students (on-campus or online) will complete the 45 credits in 7 semesters (about two years and four months).

  5. How many credit hours will I take every semester?

    Our students typically complete about 14 – 17 credit hours per semester. Full time students average 15 credit hours per semester. The number of credit hours students enroll in varies depending on which track you have chosen.

  6. How many credits do full-time online students take each semester?

    Full-time online students enroll in 14-16 credits each semester for 3 semesters to complete the 45-credit degree program. This includes credits for field placement hours.

    Standard full-time field schedule represents 3 days (24 hours) per week in field over 2 consecutive terms.

  7. How many credits do part-time online students take each semester?

    Part-time online students enroll in 5-7 credits each semester for 7 semesters to complete the 45-credit degree program. This includes credits for field placement hours.

    Standard part-time field schedule represents 2 days (16 hours) per week in field over 3 consecutive terms.

  8. How many days per week are students in field?

    Student who enter the Online MSW Program through the MasterTrack, MicroMasters, U-M Sociology and Social Work or UM Dearborn Human Services and Social Work programs will complete 16 hours of field work (2 days/week) for four semesters. Advanced Standing eligible students will complete 16 hours of field work (2 days/week) for three semesters.
