  2. Addressing Suicide: A Culturally Responsive Approach to Prevention and Intervention

    November 15, 2019 - 2:30 PM to 5:45 PM ET

    This workshop will help participants gain a deeper understanding of suicide prevention and interventions in clinical practice. With the goal to become more comfortable and confident identifying and helping address suicidal ideation, plan(s) and intent in communities, this training will offer opportunities to engage in role-plays and review case examples.

    Ethical and legal responsibilities as social workers exist when working with consumers. It is essential to understand the complexity of responses in clinical practice when suicide is present and needs to be addressed. This workshop will allow participants the opportunity to explore their beliefs regarding suicide at different stages of the lifespan and how one's beliefs do and do not influence our practice.

  3. Paris is Burning

    November 15, 2019 - 6:30 PM to 10:00 PM ET

    "This documentary focuses on drag queens living in New York City and their "house" culture, which provides a sense of community and support for the flamboyant and often socially shunned performers. Groups from each house compete in elaborate balls that take cues from the world of fashion. Also touching on issues of racism and poverty, the film features interviews with a number of renowned drag queens, including Willi Ninja, Pepper LaBeija and Dorian Corey."

    Come join Queer Advocacy Coalition, Association of Black Social Work Students, Latinx Coalition, Black Radical Healing Pathways, and Common Roots in viewing this provocative film.

  4. Affirmative Counseling and Advocacy with TGLBQ People

    November 16, 2019 - 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM ET

    This course will introduce and address issues of concern to interpersonal practice clients that identify as Transgender, Lesbian, Bisexual, Gay, Queer or questioning, focusing on the basic knowledge, interpersonal practice and advocacy skills it takes to become increasingly competent in providing counseling and advocacy for people who are members of these marginalized, yet highly resilient, groups. From a strength-based perspective, grounded in Affirmative Practice Principles, this course will focus on basic social work knowledge and understanding of these groups, the social injustice and stigma they face; but ultimately, how to effectively engage, assess and intervene with current, associated issues through therapy and advocacy. This course will also address self-exploration and ethical dilemmas for social work students and providers with TBLGQ people, and include real practice experiences with people from our local community.   5. Ambassador Harvest Party Ambassador Harvest Party

    November 16, 2019 - 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM ET

    Join us for our Ambassador Harvest Party as we celebrate community and the passing of seasons. Entrees and beverages will be provided so please be sure to RSVP so we can get accurate numbers for food. The menu will cover vegan & vegetarian options. Appetizers, side dishes, and desserts are encouraged yet are NOT required.

    Faculty, Family, and kids are welcome! Come for the food and stay for games, conversation, and community. The Northwood Community Center is accessible by the Michigan Bus Line. Northwood buses pick up at the Central Campus Transit and run every 10-15 minutes.

    Note: The Northwood Express Bus does NOT stop at the Community Center so pay attention to the Bus Line and/or ask the driver if you are uncertain. We hope to see you there!

  6. Alumni Networking Lunch with Andrea Muladore

    Come have lunch and network with esteemed alum Andrea Muladore. 

    Andrea Muladore, MSW '81,  spent 31 years at MidMichigan Medical Center in Midland, Michigan, where she served as manager of social work, spiritual care and Employee Assistance (EAP) programs. She developed the spiritual care program from the ground up and worked to insure that social work maintained its core values and strengths as hospitals transitioned to case management (often nursing driven). This is a great opportunity for those who are interested in health care, clinical work and management.

  7. Separated: Family and Community in the Aftermath of an Immigration Raid - A Book Talk with Bill Lopez

    November 18, 2019 - 12:00 PM to 1:30 PM ET

    In Separated, William D. Lopez examines the lasting damage done by a daylong act of collaborative immigration enforcement in Washtenaw County, Michigan. Exploring the chaos of immigration enforcement through the lens of community health, Lopez discusses deportation's rippling negative effects and what it looks like from the perspective of the people who experience it. Focusing on those left behind, he reveals their efforts to cope with trauma, avoid homelessness, handle worsening health, and keep their families together.

  8. Transgender Awareness Week Keynote Speaker - Kavi Ade

    November 18, 2019 - 6:30 PM to 7:30 PM ET

    The Spectrum Center invites this year's Transgender Awareness Week Keynote, Kavi Ade. Kavi Ade is a black trans queer speaker, arts educator, and nationally recognized poet of Afro and Indigenous Caribbean descent. Speaking on race, gender, sexuality, mental health, domestic violence, and sexual assault, Kavi's work grapples with being set at the throne of violence, and exploring the ways in which a body can learn to survive. Using art as resistance, they create transformative dialogue that aims to combat supremacist powers, and heal communities that have been harmed. Kavi has given poetry readings and keynote speeches, led workshops, and spoken on panels in numerous cities and communities, including over 100 colleges and universities, domestically and internationally. Kavi received the leeway foundation's transformation of work that honors "women and trans* artists and cultural producers who create art for social change, demonstrating a long-term commitment to social change work."

    Have Funding Will Travel is an opportunity to explore a variety of funding options for overseas internships and research opportunities, for both undergraduate and graduate/professional students. Representatives of several U-M funding offices will provide information, and you will be able to meet with them individually. This is a crucial opportunity to explore awards will lead to international travel, careers, and more. Everyone is welcome, but undergraduate juniors and first-year masters students are especially encouraged!

    This session will begin with an introductory panel presentation, after which you may rotate throughout the room for answers tailored to the questions you have.

    Food will be provided! Come take a well-deserved study break and think about where your education can take you.
