Serving Whom? An Exploration of How Jewish Organizations Navigate Whiteness, Privilege and Service
April 11, 2013 - 5:30 PM to 8:30 PM ET
The event will focus on the American Jewish community's changing position in the United States from a marginalized group that has not always been considered white, to its current position as a group with resources expansive enough to aid other minority and recent immigrant groups. The event will open with historical and cultural framing of Jewish experiences in the context of social service and activism by Frankel Institute fellow Jennifer Glaser. An interactive panel will follow, featuring representatives from local and national Jewish communal organizations speaking about their work in serving communities and individuals inside and outside of the Jewish community. Panel members and audience members will join in a discussion of the ways in which class, race and privilege influence the missions of Jewish communal organizations today.

Therapists generally remain confused about the different behaviors that distinguish hypersexuality. This workshop will teach you how to diagnose and treat all types of out-of-control sexual behaviors, from having a high sex drive to sexual compulsivity to being a little kinky. Youll learn to differentiate between normative and non-normative sexual behaviors, and why sexual fetishes and paraphilia aren't hypersexual behaviors. Well focus on up-to-date treatment techniques and approaches thatll help clients understand the grief, anger, humiliation, and powerlessness that can lie at the root of their sexual impulses, and discuss ways to help them replace shame with self-compassion and keep their sexual desires from dictating their lives.Paraphilias and treatment overviewand Russell Stambaugh
We will take a look at the historical, social, cultural, philosophical and other contexts that have led to the present DSM system, looking exclusively at the paraphilia portions of the DSM that have been largely overlooked in sex therapy in favor of treating sexual dysfunctions. This will start with the initial efforts to medicalize and criminalize variant sexual behaviors, the rise of psychodynamic and evolutionary explanations for sexual variability, and the origins of the present system of psychiatric diagnoses. Works by R. Krafft-Ebing, S. Freud, W. Stekel, H. Ellis, M. Hirshfeld, B. Menninger, R. Spitzer, G. Abel, R. Stoller, V. Quinsey, J. Money, R. Blanchard and others will be discussed, as well as criticisms by activists like F. Kameny, C. Moser, P. Klienplatz, O. Reiersol and S. Skeid.Developmental Disability and sexuality education Sorah Stein
Often in our work as therapists in general, and sex therapists in particular, we encounter the need for someone to work with people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Some of these people have experienced sexual abuse. Some of these individuals engage in sexual behaviors in public, at inappropriate times, using inappropriate methods or implements, or with inappropriate partners. Most of these people have little to no sexuality education. This session will focus on sexuality as a basic human right of all people. We will discuss, briefly, the implications of intellectual disability and common developmental disabilities you may encounter in your practice. Further, this session will address sexual behavior as behavior that can be assessed via functional behavior assessment methods and modified using the same functional replacement behavior strategies we use when addressing other challenging behaviors. We combine this with sexuality education as needed, to help clients engage in socially appropriate sexual behavior. Finally, we will discuss tools you can use and strategies you can implement to facilitate successful education and therapy for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
