  1. ABSWS Black History Month Film- Four Little Girls

    February 19, 2013 - 6:00 PM to 8:30 PM ET

    The Association of Black Social Work Students presents a movie night featuring Four Little Girls Created by Spike Lee. This 1997 movie is a documentary of the notorious racial terrorist bombing of an African American church during the Civil Rights Movement. Starring Maxine McNair, Walter Cronkite, and Chris McNair. Join the group for an evening of history and dialog. Pizza and pop will be served.

    This forum follows expressions of interest by U-M School of Social Work students and faculty regarding the recent legal charges filed against African American Ann Arbor high school students. The content of the forum will be divided between formal information provided by U-M and community legal scholars and professionals and facilitated discussion among participants.

  5. Alliance of Progressive Social Workers General Meeting

    February 21, 2013 - 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM ET

    The Alliance of Progressive Social Workers believes that the current approaches and standards of social work and social work education are not sufficient to eradicate the intersections of institutionalized racism, sexism, and classism that shape our lives and the lives of our clients. Consequently, we advocate for a new, more critical perspective that will allow us to be true advocates and allies to our clients by closely examining the root causes of oppression and inequality within a system that is inherently unjust, unfair, and unsustainable.

  6. Social Justice Forum on Gun Control and Violence

    February 22, 2013 - 9:00 AM to 10:30 AM ET

    The Child Welfare Learning Community, Community Organizing Learning Community, and the Student Union are co-hosting a forum about the policies and national developments related to Gun Control Reform. There will be a panel of policy experts, SSW faculty, and community representatives to discuss the developments, the impact it has on social work practice and education, and work with attendees to develop policy recommendations.   8. Who cares for the needy? The role of organized religion in the post-welfare society

    A lecture by Ram Cnaan, Associate Dean for Research School of Social Work, University of Pennsylvania

    Cnaan is a world-renowned expert in studying faith-based social services. He carried out the first national study on the role of local religious congregations in the provision of social services as well as the first one-city census of congregations.
