  1. Executive Leadership Skills in Human Service Organizations

    June 5, 2019 - 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM ET

    This mini-course focuses on the characteristics and competencies of the executive leader. After introductions and a brief overview on elements of leadership as conceptualized by different authors, we will look at a number of assays which will help the individual student compile her or his own profile. These assays will include "temperament" assessments such as the Myers-Briggs and the Emotional Intelligence Assay, on the characteristics side, and managerial assessments and Executive profile mapping from the competency sets. The interaction between characteristic sets and competency sets will be discussed. We will also explore the social psychology and sociology of leadership-in-action, Various readings from the Harvard Business Review, including one from Manfred Kets De Vries, an organizational thinker and trained psychoanalyst will be explored. The assignment will be to develop a personal learning/development plan.

  3. HIV/AIDS: Evidence Based Programs, Policies and Services

    June 6, 2019 - 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM ET

    This mini-course will acquaint students with the basic and advanced facts about HIV/AIDS and sensitize students to the multitude of public health, social policy and social service delivery issues that AIDS presents, and provide US and global perspectives to HIV/AIDS treatment and prevention. Students will be sensitized to the special challenges AIDS presents for social work practice. Students will be presented with an approach to evidence based practice, and will review the state of HIV related evidence based prevention practice from national and global perspectives.

  4. Opioid Use & Substance Use Disorders - Medication Assisted Treatments (MAT)

  5. Basic Skills for Dialectical Behavior Therapy

    June 7, 2019 - 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM ET

    DBT is an empirically supported treatment for individuals with severe emotionally regulation problems. Part of the treatment consists of teaching individuals specific skill sets in mindfulness, interpersonal effectiveness, emotional regulation and crisis management. Participants will learn an overview of these skills and how to integrate these skills into their clinical practice in both a group and individual therapy setting.

    Andrea Muladore, MSW '81,  spent 31 years at MidMichigan Medical Center in Midland, Michigan, where she served as manager of social work, spiritual care and Employee Assistance (EAP) programs.

    She developed the spiritual care program from the ground up and worked to insure that social work maintained its core values and strengths as hospitals transitioned to case management (often nursing driven).

    This is a great opportunity for those who are interested in health care, clinical work and management.

  10. Sport Social Work: Beyond the Playing Field

    Sport Social Work is becoming a powerful force in the field of sport and recreation. Social workers are leaders in infusing teams and programs with empowerment, self development, and inclusion, This workshop we will explore how social work values, concepts and interventions on both the micro and macro level enhance sport and recreation services. Specific strategies such as strength-based coaching, team building, conflict resolution, family collaboration, diversity training, community development, advocacy, and social policy will be discussed.   11. Thirteenth Annual Restoring the Neighborhood Backpack & School Supply Drive Thirteenth Annual Restoring the Neighborhood Backpack & School Supply Drive

    We invite others to join us in service by donating backpacks and/or school supplies for the 13th Neighborhood Festival Annual Backpack Giveaway in Detroit. The aim is to support the community in educational sustainability.  "Whatever good that will come out of our neighborhoods will be a direct result of the good we invest in our neighborhoods". 

    Service is an essential core value of being a social worker, and the New Leaders of Afrikan Centered Social Work Scholars are excited to offer our service of support to the 13th Neighborhood Festival Annual Backpack Giveaway in conjunction with Yusef Bunchy Shakur in the City of Detroit that will be held on August 3, 2019.   15. SSW and DPSS Personal Safety Lecture

    In partnership with the Division of Public Safety & Security, the Office of Field Instruction is sponsoring an introductory lecture to personal safety and self defense.  Our presenters from DPSS will be Candace Dorsey, Empowerment Self Defense Manager, and Sergeant Gary Hicks.  

    Description: "Our self-defense workshop takes a holistic approach to self-protection, emphasizing awareness and assertiveness skills as well as physical and verbal strategies to counter violence. The goal is to leave you better equipped to deal with everything from harassment to potentially violent people to sexual assault." 

    Information will be presented in a lecture format, and further resources will be given for students who wish to follow up with a self defense course through DPSS.  

    Food will be provided!  Students may arrive between 5:00 and 5:30 for food; the lecture will begin at 5:30.

  17. Introduction to Social Entrepreneurship

    June 21, 2019 - 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM ET

    In this mini-course, students will learn a theoretical framework for social entrepreneurship and design thinking, as well as explore the individual skills and will necessary to respond to complex social needs both locally and globally. Students will be placed on teams throughout the course to engage in hands-on activities, case studies, competitions and a leadership project.

    The objective of this course is to inspire and begin equipping students to become innovative leaders in the social sector. Specifically, we will address how to understand yourself as a leader within the context of a community and how to lead with moral imagination (the ability to put yourself in the shoes of the people you are serving); understand how an entrepreneurial mindset and operational skills can create and support social change; and turn theory into action by designing and carrying out a team leadership project.

  21. CEW+Inspire Workshop Series: Understanding Nutrition and Community Health – A Journey from Service to Research to Advocacy

    June 26, 2019 - 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM ET

    During this workshop, attendees will follow Dr. Cindy Leung’s trajectory in public health. Exploring her early work in local food banks with food-insecure populations and her scientific research on the effectiveness of our federal food programs, attendees will then discuss her present-day qualitative research to better understand the lived experiences of food-insecure individuals. Participants will learn about populations affected by food insecurity, including low-income families and college students. To wrap up the session, attendees will learn how all of this information is being used to design programs and affect future policies to benefit food-insecure populations. A hands-on wellness activity will be presented by the CEW+ Inspire team to complement this workshop.

  24. Legal Issues of Older Adults and Persons with Disabilities

    This course helps students increase their understanding of the legal issues frequently encountered by older adults and persons with disability, including estate planning, planning for incapacity, guardianship, elder abuse and exploitation, advocacy for quality long-term care and other services, eligibility for long-term care benefits and services, and elder abuse and exploitation. Students will discuss readings and case studies in small groups with other students and write short reflective pieces, as well as having the option to observe court proceedings.
