The University of Michigan School of Social Work is pleased to present Juliana Huxtable live in performance at the Lydia Mendelssohn Theatre for the 2018 Martin Luther King Symposium. Huxtable is a NYC-based artist, DJ and poet whose work probes the perception and presentation of identity, history and online communities.  Her performance marks Michigan Social Work’s first commissioned artist in over 20 years, as a part of the Social Justice Art Collection.

Huxtable will present a new iteration of her performance work highlighting her compelling use of language, and collaborations in music, projection, and lighting design.  Featuring instrumental performances by her frequent collaborators, the pianist, percussionist, and composer Joe Heffernan, Detroit-based harpist Ahya Simone with lighting design by Michael Potvin. Through Huxtable’s explorations, one may contemplate the power and powerlessness of the body as well as its dispossession in relation to technology, violence, and blackness.

In conjunction with SW713 :  Art and Design for Social Work, Social Justice and Community Change Instructed by Professor Larry Gant.

Related Projects Art in the Age of the Internet, 1989 to Today

Huxtable’s work is also included in the University of Michigan Museum of Art’s presentation of Art in the Age of the Internet, 1989 to Today. Organized by the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston, the exhibition examines the radical impact of internet culture on visual art since the invention of the web in 1989. This exhibition presents more than forty works across a variety of media—painting, performance, photography, sculpture, video, and web-based projects. It features work by some of the most important artists working today, including Judith Barry, Juliana Huxtable, Pierre Huyghe, Josh Kline, Laura Owens, Trevor Paglen, Seth Price, Cindy Sherman, Frances Stark, and Martine Syms.

This workshop will introduce participants to the Adverse Childhood Experience study. By highlighting the impact of adverse childhood experiences and toxic stress, participants will be able to identify how specific experiences impact the health and social behaviors of individuals.

Michigan ACE's Initiative seeks to share invaluable information about the implications of ACE's in our communities as well strategies for prevention and healing.

Toxic stress experiences by members of target groups will be discussed. Resiliency strategies that professionals and community members can utilize to positively improve outcomes for children and families will be explored.

Sarah Miller's research interests are in health economics and, in particular, the short-term and long-term effects of public policies that expand health insurance coverage. In addition to her work on health economics, she is also a principal investigator in the Y Combinator Basic Income Randomized Controlled Trial. Her work has been published in the New England Journal of Medicaid, American Economic Journal: Economic Policy, the Journal of Public Economics, and the Review of Economics and Statistics, among other journals. She has also been cited in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and the Economic Report of the President.

Miller is the Sanford R. Robertson Assistant Professor of Business Administration and Assistant Professor of Business Economics and Public Policy, University of Michigan.

The event was inspired by current/past experiences navigating academia, so it's focus is primarily centered on listening to understand black voices, as often black/poc experiences/pain are utilized as tools for others' learning. We have come together to organize a community event to present social work beyond a white professional framework, and dive into exploring the Black Struggle and the optics of Our contribution towards liberation. Utilizing numerous materials including the Professional Training Videotape Series developed by William R. Miller and Stephen Rollnick, this five-week series of 3-hour instruction and skill-building sessions will provide a basic introduction to Motivational Interviewing. Using the video material and supplemental handouts, along with lecture, role-playing and group discussion, this course will lay a foundation for participants to begin to develop their clinical skills in helping people accomplish change in areas of difficult behavior.

This mini-course focuses on the real community and personal impact of a public policy with sweeping national controversy, many deaths, and significant questions about social justice, racial discrimination, and even intent in the constitution. Because it is a mini-course, rather than a full course, this course will concentrate on one aspect of immigration policy? undocumented immigrants and the public policy strategy of enforcement for undocumented immigrants at the border and in the interior of the country. Along with discussion of the policies and practices of enforcement, we will bring local enforcement activities to the table and examine their impact on people, families, and Michigan communities. The discussion will have a global, national, state, and a local component. Students in this course will acquire the skills to critically analyze this aspect of immigration policy and its controversies. and about community and organization responses and activism.

Observance of World Day of Social Justice should support efforts of the international community in poverty eradication, the promotion of full employment and decent work, gender equity and access to social well-being and justice for all.

This webinar will utilize the 2017 NASW, ASWB, CSWE, and CSWA Standards for Technology in Social Work Practice and the NASW Code of Ethics to assist participants in exploring practice implications related to online networking (ON) and social media use. Participants will explore core ethical concepts that guide practice and define their personal and professional responsibilities with regard to risk management, as well as help them discover the benefits of sound agency policies related to the ethical use of ON and social media.

Professor Edith C. Kieffer, MPH, Ph.D., University of Michigan School of Social Work, conducts research addressing health and health care disparities. She has extensive experience planning, conducting and analyzing data from qualitative formative research and intervention research studies in community and health care settings, including randomized clinical trials. Kieffer is a co-Investigator for the evaluation of the Healthy Michigan Plan Medicaid expansion. She is leading qualitative studies around Michigan that explore the experiences of beneficiaries and health care providers, and the impact of Medicaid coverage, including its requirements and incentives, on access to and use of care, beneficiary health and other outcomes.
