  1. Faculty Event: Learning to be in "S-I-N-C" with International Students with a Practical Framework

    October 5, 2022 - 2:30 PM to 4:00 PM ET

International students often face a unique set of challenges while pursuing their education outside their home countries. Many of the challenges related to class participation, assignments, and engagement with the US academic culture can be made less difficult when faculty are aware of the challenges and equipped with tools to help mitigate them.

In this workshop, Dr. Zuzana Tomaš, Associate Professor of ESL/TESOL at Eastern Michigan University, will present information about the US academic culture and factors that influence international student success. She will then share a framework and pedagogical strategies that she has developed for faculty to work more effectively with international students.

Dr. Tomaš will also draw from the results of the U-M SSW International Student Experience Survey - which was developed by the Office of Global Activities and shared with students in the Winter 2022 semester - to illustrate how these strategies could help address issues present at the School of Social Work. She will be joined by some of our international students who will share their experiences.

All faculty are invited to learn more about how you can better support international students and help them feel welcomed at the U-M School of Social Work!

  2. Global Independent Study Information Session

    October 12, 2022 - 2:30 PM to 4:00 PM ET

Join us for an information session for incoming MSW students interested in pursuing a Global Independent Study, a student-initiated opportunity to design a global social work project abroad. Students from all pathways and curriculum tracks are eligible to apply and can receive 1-6 elective credits. Grant recipients will receive up to $2,500 to help cover the cost of their experience.

The session will provide an overview of the grant, the application process, and travel considerations, followed by a Q&A session. We will also have a panel of returned Global Independent Study students share about what they did this past summer, where they went, and their overall experience.

If you cannot attend this event in person, a recording of the session will be made available.

    October 19, 2022 - 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM ET

The Office of Global Activities hosts a bi-weekly coffee hour for all international students and visitors in the School of Social Work. This coffee hour will be a social event for international students and visitors to get together and talk about their experiences with this semester so far. It will be a great opportunity to connect with other international students and visitors after Fall Break, ask questions, and share advice. Milk tea will be served at this Coffee Hour. Please fill out the RSVP form by Tuesday, October 18 at 11:59 PM to confirm your attendance and select your milk tea flavor.
