Funding and Scholarships

  1. Are Online MSW students eligible for grants and scholarships?

    Online MSW students can apply for need and merit-based grants and scholarships. More information about financial aid can be found here.

  2. Are Online MSW students eligible for work-study positions and teaching assistantships at the University of Michigan?

    Yes, Online MSW students are eligible for work-study, Graduate Student Instructor (GSI), or Graduate Student Staff Assistant (GSSA) positions. Students must meet the criteria listed on the U-M Human Resources website. Online MSW students must enroll in at least 6 credits in a term to hold a GSI or GSSA position. Positions are posted on the U-M Careers website. Work-study positions are posted on the U-M Student Employment website.

  3. Are special scholarships programs available for online students?

    No, special scholarship programs must be completed through the On-Campus MSW Program 16 month (full time) or Advanced Standing (full time) schedules.

  4. Can Online MSW students apply for loans?

    Yes, Online MSW students may submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid to apply for federal loans.

  5. Can Online MSW students complete teaching assistantships or work-study positions remotely?

    Students should reach out directly to hiring departments to inquire if work can be conducted in a remote manner. Graduate Student Instructor (GSI) or Graduate Student Staff Assistant (GSSA) remotely positions will be posted on the U-M Careers website. Work-study positions are posted on the U-M Student Employment website.

General Online MSW

  1. Can students switch between the Online and On-Campus programs?

    It is strongly recommended that students who are interested in both the on-campus and online program, apply for both the Online Program and the On-Campus programs.

  2. Can the Online MSW degree be completed Full-time?

    The online degree is offered as a part-time program. A full-time option will be available beginning fall 2023.

  3. How long does it take to complete the Online MSW degree?

    The master of social work (MSW) is a 60-credit-hour degree program that can be completed part-time or full-time through one of the curriculum schedules listed below.
