Students currently or previously enrolled in another accredited master's-level social work degree program may be eligible to transfer into the On-Campus or Online Master of Social Work (MSW) programs at the University Of Michigan School Of Social Work. Students currently or previously enrolled in a degree-seeking or non-degree seeking graduate-level program other than social work may be eligible to transfer a maximum of 15 credit hours into the MSW program; if MSW courses are included, then a maximum of 19 credits will be considered. View the Student Guide: Policy for Accepting Graduate Transfer Credit for more information. Please note that we do not grant social work course credit for life experience or previous work experience. Credits that were or will be used toward an earned degree are not eligible for transfer in our MSW program.
Students in the Online MSW program may be eligible to transfer courses taken at another accredited master's-level social work degree program or other non-social work graduate program in accordance with School's transfer policy. Additionally, in the Online Program, a student must enter as an advanced learner; advanced standing eligible, U-M Sociology & SW, UM-Dearborn Human Services & SW or has covered courses and credits equivalent to the following:
If any of these courses are missing a student may choose to enroll in them at their home institution, or they may choose to pursue the complete MasterTrack Certificate to meet this requirement. Please note: it is not possible to enroll in individual MasterTrack courses. All courses offered through the certificate would need to be completed. All required courses must be completed prior to the first semester of enrollment.
Complete this form (at least one month prior to applying to the MSW Program or enrolling in the MasterTrack Certificate) in order to have your courses reviewed for possible transfer into our MSW program.
Students in the On-Campus MSW program may be eligible to transfer courses taken at another accredited master's-level social work degree program or other non-social work graduate program in accordance with School’s transfer policy.
Complete this form (at least one month prior to applying to the MSW Program or enrolling in the MasterTrack Certificate) in order to have your courses reviewed for possible transfer into our MSW program.
Apply through the MSW Application.
Students currently or previously enrolled in another accredited master's-level social work degree program who are seeking admission as a transfer student to the Online or On-Campus MSW program are required to submit the following additional materials:
Admissions counselors are available to talk with applicants about the transfer process. Please contact the Office of Student Services and Enrollment Management to schedule a phone, Zoom, or in-person appointment: [email protected] or 734-936-0961.
Undergraduates who complete graduate level coursework may be able to transfer this credit into the MSW program reducing the number of credits needed for the MSW degree. In order for the credits to be transferable, they cannot be used for any undergraduate degree requirements (credits or content areas). Students must request that their courses are reviewed and must also provide a letter from their University Registrar stating that the courses were not used for undergraduate degree credits or content requirements. This review is required for students who completed courses at the University of Michigan School of Social Work unless the student is part of the U-M Sociology and Social Work or UM-Dearborn Human Services and Social Work program options. Please note: students must apply to the MSW program and be fully admitted in order to transfer credit into the MSW program. Undergraduate students who completed graduate coursework can apply to the program as a regular applicant and do not need to follow the process for a "transfer applicant" which requires submission of a transfer statement and academic standing letter.
Complete this form at the earliest date possible as transfer of 12 or more credits could reduce a semester of enrollment in the MSW Program requiring earlier course and field placement planning.
If graduate social work courses (completed during undergraduate studies) were used for undergraduate degree requirements, students can apply to be exempt from this coursework while completing the MSW degree. This option will allow for MSW students to have more elective credit in the MSW program, but will not reduce the number of credits needed for the degree.
