Lecture: Sports and Youth Development

Tarkington Newman will present his research on "Sports and Youth Development". This event is part of this fall's LSA Theme Semester, Sports and the University. Food will be provided.

Tarkington J. Newman (BS, Central Michigan University; MSW, University of Michigan) is a doctoral student in the College of Social Work and will also be earning as masters of science in Kinesiology. His research interest included sport-based positive youth development amongst at-risk adolescent urban male minorities, as well as the integration of social work practice within sport culture. More specifically, his focus is on the mechanisms of the youth sport leader (i.e. coach) in intentionally facilitating life skill development through the utilization of an experiential learning framework within the context of competitive athletics. He is currently a Graduate Enrichment Fellow and a Graduate Research Associate where services as the Teaching & Learning Coordinator of the LiFE Sports Initiative. Prior to joining OSU, Tarkington worked for two years as a school social work intern at the high school level utilizing adventure and experiential-based therapy as well as spending the last four years coaching competitive high school track & field.
