- Organization Mission: Boulevard House is a 21st century campus-community settlement house in Detroit that opened its doors in 2012. The Boulevard House works to create place-based residential space for campus community collaborative work in the southwest Detroit neighborhoods of Hubbard-Richard and Hubbard Farms.
Gleaners Community Food Bank has been "nourishing communities by feeding hungry people" for over 35 years. Last year, Gleaners distributed 46 million pounds of emergency food to more than 550 partner soup kitchens, shelters and pantries in Wayne, Oakland, Macomb, Livingston, and Monroe counties. They work to alleviate hunger by providing the equivalent of more than 100,000 meals per day to people who otherwise cannot afford the food they need.
- Project Description: At the Boulevard House, students will assist with the enhancement of the physical structure of the facility. There will be opportunities to paint, garden, and conduct demolition work. Students will also be canvassing the neighborhood distributing information packages about programs at the Boulevard House and interacting with Detroit based service providers and community organizers who will discuss strategies and actions to support residents during this time of Detroit's transformation. At Gleaners Community Food Bank, students will have the opportunity to learn about how Gleaner's helps to provide food for families in Metro Detroit while packing food boxes, sorting food items/canned goods, and assisting with agency food orders. Water will be provided.
