Fall 2013 Community Service Day #2: The James and Grace Lee Boggs School

Sign up for one of the Community Service Day sites by calling the Office of Student Services at (734) 936-0961 by August 16th, 2013. Sites will be filled on a first come, first served basis.

This event will depart from the School of Social Work at the time listed. Transportation will be provided.

  • Organization Mission: The mission of the James and Grace Lee Boggs School is to nurture creative, critical thinkers who are empowered to contribute to the well-being of their communities. The Boggs Educational Center is fulfilling its goals by implementing a Place-Based Education (PBE) curriculum. PBE immerses students in local heritage, cultures, landscapes, opportunities and experiences, using these as a foundation for the study of language arts, mathematics, social studies, science and other subjects across the curriculum. PBE emphasizes learning through participation in service projects for the school and local community. The James and Grace Lee Boggs School will be opening its doors on September 3, 2013.
  • Project Description: The James and Grace Lee Boggs School is opening its doors this fall and needs volunteers to paint, plant flowers, set up classrooms, mow the lawns, and clean up around the school building in the neighborhood. Water will be provided.
  • Service Location: 4141 Mitchell St, Detroit, MI 48207
  • Special Instructions: Wear close-toed shoes and comfortable clothes appropriate for working outdoors/painting. Dress for the weather and bring sunscreen. Please bring necessary allergy medication(s) (for bees, plants, etc). Please do not bring many personal items.
