Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Do students have to apply to the Social Work: Practice, Policy and Research MasterTrack Certificate program?

    No. Anyone can enroll in MasterTrack courses.

  2. Do students have to live near Michigan to attend the online MSW program?

    No. Students are not required to live near Michigan for the Online MSW Program, but students are required to complete field placement hours in the United States.

  3. Do students take all 6 MasterTrack Courses at the same time?

    No. The MasterTrack certificate was designed to be completed over a 6 month period (taking 2 classes at a time), or a 4 month period (taking 3 classes at a time). It is strongly discouraged for students to take more than 3 classes at a time, unless they are working on the MasterTrack full time. Each course is approximately 8-weeks long.

  4. Do students take all 6 Social Work Essentials Courses at the same time?

    No. The Social Work Essentials certificate was designed to be completed over a 4 month period (taking 3 classes at a time).   5. Do the courses for the Social Work Essentials or MasterTrack Certificate have a required practicum site? If yes, is there support for finding a field placement?

    No, the certificate programs do not require a field placement (practicum). Students will be required to engage in a field placement once enrolled in the MSW degree program and the Office of Field Education will assist in setting up a placement.

  6. Do you anticipate adding additional pathways to your online MSW program in the future?

    Yes! We plan to offer the Welfare of Children & Families pathway beginning in Fall 2024. We may offer additional pathways following that addition.

  7. Do you offer a part-time MSW program at the University of Michigan?

    Yes. Please feel free to review details on our part-time options.

  8. Do you offer a part-time or an online PhD?

    No. You must be registered as a full-time student studying on campus to receive our funding package. Students are expected to devote full time to their studies and are supported financially to enable them to do that.
