Self-Care for Social Workers Workshop
March 17, 2025 - 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM ET
Self-care is a professional and ethical obligation for social workers. What does it look like to engage in regular, intentional, effective self-care? In this 60-minute workshop, we will explore what self-care looks like in practice and share specific strategies to manage stress and improve well-being. Students who attend this session may count this workshop as field hours with approval from their field instructor. Interested students can sign up for the workshop at the link below and will receive a zoom invite the day of the event.
This workshop is for enrolled students in the School of Social Work only.

Film Screening & Discussion of Nuh-Mi-Bee-Uhn by Kavena Hambira

Join us for a screening of Nuh-Mi-Bee-Uhn by Kavena Hambira, an artist, scholar, and descendant of Herero survivors of Germany’s first 20th-century genocide. The film screening will be followed by a discussion with Kavena Hambira and Prof. Feyisetan Adunbi.

Know Your Rights & International Social Work

The ACLU will host a ‘Know Your Rights’ session on how the recent executive orders affect international students. This informative session will be followed by a space for questions and comments.
In collaboration with the University Career Center, explore macro social work opportunities beyond the U.S with Rachel Zhang! Rachel is the Career Coordinator for international students at UM. A Night of Gratitude: UM SSW Ramadan Iftar

Join us for an evening of reflection, connection, and renewal as we gather for Iftar, the meal to break the fast during Ramadan. This special event will provide a space for mindfulness, gratitude, and community dialogue as we reflect on the spiritual, personal, and collective lessons of the holy month.
The evening will include guided reflections, moments of prayer and remembrance, and an opportunity to share personal insights on growth, resilience, and the deeper meaning of fasting. As we break bread together, we will foster meaningful conversations centered on gratitude, generosity, and strengthening our bonds as a community.
All are welcome to join in this sacred moment of pause and togetherness. Whether you are observing Ramadan or joining in solidarity, we invite you to share in this experience of reflection, renewal, and unity.

Competent Social Work Practice in the Context of Anti-Trans Policy, Legislation, and Rhetoric

Recent years have witnessed a drastic increase in anti-trans policies and legislation proposed and pass across the U.S. Given the ethical mandates of the profession and the values rooted in social justice, social workers must be at the forefront of addressing these harmful policies and the rhetoric surrounding them. Clinical and macro practitioners alike have a critical role to play in supporting transgender and gender expansive children and adults, as well as their families, and advocating against policies that seek to do harm to transgender people. This workshop will first provide social work practitioners with a background on the current U.S. context as it relates to anti-trans policies, legislation, and rhetoric. Next, practitioners will develop clinical, macro, and multisystem skills for supporting transgender individuals and advocating at the community or state levels.
