Social Work Education for Competent, Socially Just Practice with LGBTQ People: Opportunities and Challenges

This mini-conference will explore what social work faculty and field educators can do to better prepare students for competent and socially just practice with LGBTQ people. Content addresses indicators of competent practice (clinical and macro), teaching strategies, and educational determinants of readiness for practice.

Pizza & Pontification Revival
March 22, 2013 - 12:00 PM to 1:30 PM ET
Professor David Tucker will be leading a discussion, "Pizza & Pontification" revival, on March 22, 12-1:30 pm in the Curtis Center. Professor Tucker will use his co-authored paper "Attachment theory and change processes in foster care," reviewers' comments and authors' rejoinder as a basis for beginning an important discussion on theory construction and testing in social work research, where it fits, and how researchers are being trained to use/evaluate it.

Beyond the Playing Field: The Social Impact of Sport

This will be an interdisciplinary conference aiming to integrate social science knowledge into sport culture. The Social Work and Sport Association (SWSA) is a student organization at the University of Michigan School of Social Work. The goal of the conference is to raise awareness and help coaches, athletic directors and social workers develop practical skills to use in coaching and counseling practices. Some of the topics and issues that will be covered include:
Coaching for Positive Youth Development
Parental Involvement
Team Building & Sportsmanship
Advocacy for College Athletes
Diversity & Gender in Sport
Long Term Outcomes of Sport Involvement
The conference is scheduled for Friday, March 22, 2012 from 12:30pm-5:15pm in the Hatcher Library at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, MI. Please save the date! School of Social Work Town Hall Meeting
March 26, 2013 - 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM ET
Originally scheduled for February 26th; postponed due to winter storm.
The Student Union is hosting a Town Hall event for students, faculty, and the rest of the Social Work Community. This is an opportunity for students to interact with faculty, share concerns and comments about their experiences at the school, and dialogue with peers. There will be a panel of faculty and student organization representatives, followed by small group break-out discussions about specific topics in the SSW with students, faculty, and staff. This event will be facilitated by the Student Union and the goal is to conduct the event in a constructive and strengths-based way, rather than merely listing student complaints. In the small group portions, students, faculty and staff will work collaboratively to brainstorm solutions where there are areas for improvement in the SSW.

Screening of Beasts of the Southern Wild and Q&A with Director Benh Zeitlin

On March 27, 2013, from 5:30 - 8:30 pm in the ECC, the Learning Community on Poverty and Inequality will hold a screening of the highly-acclaimed film Beasts of the Southern Wild. Following the screening attendees will be joined by writer and director, Benh Zeitlin, via Skype for a question and answer session. Beasts of the Southern Wild was Zeitlin's first feature film and has won him several awards in addition to Academy Award nominations for Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay. Refreshments will be provided, and registration for the event is preferred.
