Coalition Building Teach-In & Advocacy Sign-Making
March 27, 2025 - 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM ET
Coalitions have long been powerful tools for driving change, uniting individuals and organizations around shared goals that extend beyond the capacity of any single entity. From information sharing to advocacy for major policy shifts, coalition-building is essential for fostering collaboration and impact.
This peer-led teach-in will provide foundational knowledge, tools, and skills to help students and organizations start or strengthen a coalition. Through interactive discussions and activities, participants will explore key aspects of coalition building, including defining its importance, understanding the steps involved, identifying necessary skills, and strategizing ways to overcome challenges.
To bring theory into action, the session will conclude with a creative advocacy sign-making activity. Participants will design and craft signs that amplify the messages of their causes, practicing coalition-building strategies in real time through collective advocacy.
Learning OutcomesBy the end of this session, participants will be able to:
Define coalition and its significance in advocacy and social change
Understand the steps involved in building a coalition
Identify key skills necessary for coalition-building
Recognize challenges and develop strategies to navigate them
Reflect on ways to enhance coalition-building efforts in their own communities

Undoing Racism Workgroup
March 27, 2025 - 2:00 PM to 3:30 PM ET
Undoing Racism is a community collective of students, staff and faculty in the School of Social Work dedicated to fighting white supremacy at individual, school and structural levels. This workgroup was established in 2019 after the community took part in the People's Institute for Survival and Beyond Undoing Racism workshops and builds on their anti-racist community organizing model. No matter what role you play here at SSW, you are always welcome and encouraged to come to Undoing Racism meetings.

Self-Care for Social Workers Workshop
March 28, 2025 - 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM ET
Self-care is a professional and ethical obligation for social workers. What does it look like to engage in regular, intentional, effective self-care? In this 60-minute workshop, we will explore what self-care looks like in practice and share specific strategies to manage stress and improve well-being. Students who attend this session may count this workshop as field hours with approval from their field instructor. Interested students can sign up for the workshop at the link below and will receive a zoom invite the day of the event.
This workshop is for enrolled students in the School of Social Work only.

SSW Commencement Information Session for May 2025 Graduates - Virtual
March 31, 2025 - 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM ET
This online session for students graduating in May 2025 will provide the opportunity to learn more about the School of Social Work commencement proceedings! Topics covered will include Day-of ceremony information and the opportunity to ask questions.
All registered attendees will receive a recording of the session.
Note: Our School of Social Work ceremony is separate from the main university ceremony held at Michigan Stadium. The information covered in this presentation will only pertain to the School of Social Work ceremony.

LGBTQIA+ Youth: Recognizing, Responding and Managing Emotional Pain
April 4, 2025 - 9:00 AM to 12:15 PM ET
Suicide is the second leading cause of death in the United States for youth between the ages of 13-24. According to the National Council on Behavioral Health, youth that identify as LGBTQIA+ are 300% more at risk for attempting suicide and have identified rejection and negative reactions from family and social supports as precepitating factors to causing distress. Suicide and self harm have been identified as the solutions to address mental, emotional, and social distresses that don't have a perceived solution. Youth engaged in child welfare programs have an increased rate of exposure to trauma and increased risk to engage in behaviors that are harmful. This course will provide an overview of the prevalence of mental health concerns of LGBTQIA+ youth, introduce emotional pain as a concept to consider as a need to manage in treatment and methods to deliver services in accordance to ethical standards and obligations.

2025 IMPACT Awards
April 7, 2025 - 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM ET
The IMPACT Awards honors outstanding students, faculty, staff, and student organizations who have demonstrated a strong commitment to advancing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion efforts within the School of Social Work and/or the broader community. Up to three individuals and one group may receive this award.
Nomination Details:Open to all current SSW students, faculty, staff, and registered student organizations.
Individuals may self-nominate or be nominated by another person or group.
Submission Deadline: Friday, March 21, 2025
We encourage you to submit a nomination and help us celebrate the impactful work of our community!
