We invite you to a Community Conversation around the The Impact of Banned Books on Society on Tuesday, October 10th, from 12:00 -1:00 pm ET. 

Join us to discuss how banned books have shaped our society. Explore the power of literature to challenge norms and promote social change during Banned Books Week.

Banned books are not just stories; they serve as agents of change, igniting conversations and inspiring progress. During Banned Books Week, let's explore how these once-restricted narratives have questioned societal norms, broken down barriers, and illuminated the path toward a more inclusive and enlightened world. Together, we'll celebrate the resilience of literature in amplifying underrepresented voices, advocating for change, and fostering unity within our communities.

This is a time for conversation – to share feelings, raise concerns, and talk together as a school community. To aid the conversation, space will be limited. (We know it's coming up soon, so if you miss it, don't fear!  If there is a lot of interest in this topic, we can hold another session soon.)

About the format. With these smaller Community Conversations, our hope is to explore restorative dialogue and build community, creating a space where we are all teachers and learners. We will draw heavily on practices from intergroup dialogue and restorative justice.

Discover the importance of intellectual freedom and the consequences of censorship in our community. Let's talk about the balance between protecting vulnerable readers and preserving our right to access diverse ideas.

This conversation will explore the delicate balance between safeguarding readers from potentially objectionable content and upholding our fundamental right to access a wide range of ideas and perspectives.

In this training, we will cover: Succession Planning, Maize Pages, Authorized Signers/SOAS accounts, Mcommunity, Shared Google Drive/Folder, Funding Opportunities for your org, Renewal/Registration Process for CCI & OSS Shared Google Calendar with student org leaders. The training will cover the logistics of running a student org and available support. We will also go over CCI & SSW Policies, Student Conduct & Logo, Media Performance Rights, and the Nondiscrimination policy.

Throughout the history of social work practice, there has been a focus on subduing “deviance” in individuals as a means of combating larger social problems. “Deviance” being a subjective category, is often used to uphold power structures that only a few truly benefit from. Transness has historically been one of those forms of “deviance,” and although some progress has been made within our discipline, a lot of work is still needed. Cisnormativity is the idea that being a cisgender person is the standard or the norm, and therefore implies that being a trans person is a deviation– is still prevalent and pervasive in our field. This is evident in many social work programs, where trans issues are introduced as part of “special lectures,” and trans people are positioned as the unlikely exceptions to watch out for. Webinars and continuing education events are held to answer questions like “how do I use pronouns?” and “if my client is on hormones, can they still be prescribed their regular psychiatric medications?.” While these questions are extremely important, they are often the only topics trans social workers are ever consulted as the experts on. In this panel we will explore what decentering cisnormativity, while centering the expertise of trans social workers - in all respects and fields of knowledge - looks like. This session will also focus on how challenging typical notions of “deviance” can transform our field and how we work with others. Speakers TBA.
