Social Work Allies for Immigrant Rights (SWAIR) will be showing the CNN documentary "Documented" that details the life of Jose Antonio Vargas, who only found out late in his adult life that he was technically an undocumented immigrant to the United States who was brought here by his family at a very young age. The film explores the difficulties faced by José as he tries to navigate our current immigration system. In a brave and bold move, José "comes out" to the world as an undocumented immigrant, demonstrating the absurdity of the system that creates situations in which humans like José are forced out of the United States for technicalities and other reasons they may have absolutely no control over. Following the film, club members will host a brief discussion about the significance and implications of José's life, what small steps students can take two promote humane immigration reform, and will learn the essential details of current immigration legislation from representatives of the Michigan Immigrant Rights Center (MIRC).
Tmaz tacos will be served.
