The Online MSW Program's virtual SW 590 course & SEED Orientation for the Winter 2024 semester will be Friday, January 5th - Sunday, January 7th. This will be a packed weekend and it is mandatory for all incoming students. Please plan to be available beginning 12pm (EST) on January 5th and the entire day on January 6th & 7th. There will be a mix of pre-work, live course sessions and homework. More information regarding orientation for the Winter 2024 semester will be updated on this page as it is available.
There will be pre-work that will be due before Orientation Weekend. In order to access the Canvas sites linked below, you will need to create an Uniqname. Your Uniqname is your University of Michigan login to campus sites. If you have not set up your umich email address, learn more and set up your uniqname here.
Before orientation, we want to make sure that you are best prepared to begin your journey in the Online MSW Program. To support this, we have created a site on Canvas called “Intro to Online Learning.” This course will introduce you to navigating and using the technology and resources each online student will use while completing this program. We strongly encourage you to log into your Canvas account to begin exploring and becoming familiar with the resources listed on the Canvas site prior to Orientation Weekend.

The School of Social Work actively seeks to uphold and influence anti-racist practices in Social Work education and across the Social Work profession. Therefore, each incoming MSW student will be required to complete the Undoing Racism interactive webinar. The Undoing Racism webinar encourages participants to examine and reflect on how the intersections of social identities and social locations impacts engagement with others from different backgrounds in your practice as a social worker with a particular focus on Race. The goal of this webinar is to create shared language around norms and anti-racist practices in your experience as a student and future practice as a social worker. Engagement in this interactive webinar is mandatory, and should be completed prior to Orientation Weekend.

Our online student orientation will focus around completing a 1 credit course: SW 590: Introduction to Social Work Practice. Please view the full course description here This course will be hosted on Canvas and will include synchronous meetings over orientation weekend and asynchronous work that will need to be completed before, during and after orientation. SW 590 is a 1-credit course, so all pre and post work are treated as assignments and will need to be completed by their assigned due date. Please note that there is pre-work that will need to be completed prior to Orientation Weekend. You will get access to the SW590 Canvas site via email a few weeks prior to the orientation weekend.
