Virtual SW 590 & SEED Orientation Weekend

Welcome to the University of Michigan School of Social Work!

Congratulations on being admitted to the Online MSW Program! I am very excited to meet you soon and support you on your social work academic journey.

Welcome Guide

Attached, please find our Online MSW Student Welcome Guide, which provides an holistic overview of important MSW program information, expectations and student resources.

SW 590 & SEED Virtual Orientation Weekend

The SW 590 & SEED Orientation Weekend will be from 12 pm Friday August 26th to Sunday August 28th. Please make plans to be available on these dates- no exceptions. This is not just a traditional orientation, but it is focused around completing SW 590: Introduction to Social Work Practice, which is a 1-credit course. In addition to the SW 590 course, there will be other orientation-type activities, including opportunities to meet Online MSW Program staff, meeting your faculty advisor and technical advisor, as well as community-building events. More information will be communicated closer to the weekend.

*Please note that the first official day of the Fall 2022 semester for the Online MSW Program will be on Tuesday August 23rd. This is the date when the Canvas sites for classes will be opened and emailed to you, so that you can review any pre-work for your other classes (in addition to SW 590 pre-work). Classes will begin to meet synchronously over Zoom on Tuesday August 30th, after the SW590/Orientation Weekend.

Details to Note About the Weekend

  • Please "save the date" for the SW 590 & SEED Orientation weekend to your calendar. Again, the dates are Friday August 26th to Sunday August 28th.
  • We will send out the schedule for the weekend later in the Summer.
  • The schedule for this weekend will be pretty packed; please make arrangements to be available starting at Noon EDT on Friday August 26th and during the entire day on Saturday August 27th and Sunday August 28th. There will also be homework to complete in the evenings.
  • Note that there will be coursework prior to the start of the SW 590 class and assignments that will be due after the class ends.
  • You will get an email invitation to the SW 590 Canvas course site, where all course materials will be kept, early August 2022.
  • Heads Up: You will need to purchase a textbook for the course- Digital Portfolio Construction: A Guide for Showcasing Social Work Skills [ISBN-13 9781516527106]. Please purchase in time to complete the reading listed in the pre-work for the SW590 course.
  • The SW590 live class sessions and all additional activities will happen over Zoom.
  • Remember, SW 590 is a credit-bearing course that is a part of your MSW curriculum; course attendance, participation and completion is mandatory.

Additional Pre-work Prior to the SW 590 & SEED Orientation Weekend

Please review the Admitted Student Webpage for information on the following additional pre-orientation work:

Communication

To communicate with fellow classmates, the Online MSW Program will be utilizing Slack. There is detailed information about how to use Slack in the Welcome Guide. The only Slack Channels that will be monitored are the ones created by the Online MSW Program. Students are allowed to create public and private channels and use it as a way to chat amongst their classmates over group projects, different topics/themes, etc. All person to person chats are also private. By late summer 2022, you will be added to the Slack Workspace: SSW Online Program. While you are encouraged to remain in the workspace and use Slack, you are welcome to mute or remove yourself from it. Please review the Communications section of the Welcome Guide for reminders around communication best practices and expectations.

To see all emails and information communicated and sent out to admitted students, please view them on the Communications Tile on the Admitted Student toolkit page.

If you have any additional questions or concerns about the Online MSW Program, SW 590 & SEED Orientation Weekend or anything else about your School of Social Work experience, please do not hesitate to email me at bshiltz@umich.edu.

Sincerely,
Barb
