Student Guide & Safety/Emergency Preparedness

We hope you are having a great winter and are looking forward to meeting you virtually during orientation weekend!

You will find the 2022-23 MSW Student Guide online. The Student Guide is updated each year and this year's version includes the rules and procedures for MSW students. Please take some time to review the Student Guide for information on the School's Academic and Professional Policies, MSW Curriculum, and Field Curriculum.

Please also take some time to review the Safety & Emergency Preparedness webpage, where you may view the University's Active Attacker Response and Prevention Video, Register for U-M Emergency Alerts, and learn more about being prepared if you are on campus.

Student Health Insurance Plan

The University of Michigan encourages all students to have health insurance. If you need insurance coverage, the Domestic Student Health Insurance Plan (DSHIP) through Blue Care Network of Michigan (BCN) has generous benefits at a reasonable cost.

Insurance cost for an individual student for coverage dates 1/1/23-8/23/23 is $1,526. Deadline for purchase is January 31, 2023.

Enrollment for these coverage dates begins in mid-December.

  • This insurance plan provides coverage with a wide array of benefits, including: clinic visits, prescription medication, annual vision exam, hospitalization, emergency care, limited dental benefits and more.
  • Annual deductible is only $100 for in-network care and $100 for out-of-network care.
  • In-network coverage is available throughout the U.S.
  • This plan is available to U-M students studying on campus and those who are studying remotely.
  • DSHIP is available to enrolled U-M students and their spouses, domestic partners, and dependents under the age of 26 (if the student is enrolled in the plan).

In addition, please review important information on the Health Service Fee and University Health Services (UHS):

Note that students in the Online MSW Program do not pay the health service fee, but may be eligible to purchase the UHS Prepaid Plan if they wish to use UHS services.
