Computing and IT for MSW Students

Online MSW students are required to obtain a personal laptop or desktop computer. Please review the Requirement Policy.

Due to the nature of assignments in the SSW, students would benefit from having Microsoft Office (available to current UM students at no charge) or similar software package. Additionally, come courses may require that students purchase SPSS (available to current UM students at a significantly reduced cost) for their personal computer. Note that tablets will not meet the computer requirement as they are unable to run SPSS.

U-M Microsoft Office 365 and the Adobe Creative Cloud are available to current University of Michigan students at no charge.

The UMICH Tech Guide is a valuable resource of information on tech needs, as well as tech services available to students while at Michigan.

Get Your MCard

All MSW students are welcome to obtain a student ID, which is called an 'Mcard'. If you are in the area and use in-person campus resources, the Mcard may be needed to check out library materials, access U-M buildings (such as workout facilities or the SSWB) and will allow you to ride AATA and U-M buses for free. Mcard holders are eligible for numerous discounts around the U-M and Ann Arbor area. Note that your Mcard photo is also used for the class roster.

Steps to obtain your Mcard:

  • Submit your photo (from your U-M email account) to mcardadmin@umich.edu by December 31, 2021.
  • Be sure that your Current Address is up-to-date in Wolverine Access.
  • The School will mail your Mcard to you at your current address, as listed in Wolverine Access, in mid-to-late January.

Have an existing Mcard? Please review the Existing Mcards webpage.

SW 505 Exemption

Online advanced standing students may pursue an exemption from SW 505: Engaging Social Justice, Diversity and Oppression in Social Work through the exemption request form. While obtaining an exemption from SW 505 is rare, online advanced standing students are eligible for an exemption from SW 505 if they believe that they have taken prior coursework in social justice and diversity in the last 6 years receiving a B or higher in the course(s). We advise students to apply for an exemption from this course now rather than waiting until their term of entry.

The exemption process is web-based and student-initiated. We encourage students to request exemptions as soon as possible as it may affect course selections during the term SW 505 is offered for online advanced standing students. Please note that an exemption from SW 505 does not decrease credit hours needed for graduation, but increases the elective credits (3) available to students. Advanced Standing Online students will still need to take 45 credit hours in order to graduate.

Please click the Exemption Request Process button below for more information about exemption eligibility and the exemption application process. If an exemption is granted, students should schedule a course planning appointment with their technical advisor, Dayna Asante-Appiah (daappiah@umich.edu) to discuss course selection.
