    SPECIFIC JOB DUTIES
    The University of Michigan is seeking a qualified Learning Experience Designer (LXD) to join a creative, talented and entrepreneurial team within the Office of Academic Innovation (AI) that is shaping the digital learning landscape at U-M and beyond. The LXD will be funded by the School of Social Work and will have a primary focus on educational innovation within the School of Social Work (SSW). NOTE: This is a three-year,term-limited position.

    Academic Innovation is a strategic priority for the University of Michigan. Through curricular innovation, leadership in learning analytics, and digital infrastructure at scale, AI aims to transform the way we educate and engage our residential students. The University of Michigan has been a pioneer in delivering massive open online courses (MOOCs) through multiple platforms such as Coursera and EdX, and has reached over 4 million online learners. The School of Social Work is ranked as the number one school in the country and is engaged in a range of innovative instructional initiatives within their master’s and doctoral programs.

    The Learning Experience Designer works closely with faculty, project managers, programmers, researchers, and media specialists to design and enhance courses and learning experiences. This role is a key contributor in expanding the capabilities of AI and the SSW to achieve our vision of transforming education. This role reports to AI’s Director of of the Digital Education & Innovation Lab and to the SSW Associate Dean for Educational Programs with a goal of expanding the AI team's and SSW’s capacity, expertise, and knowledge of pedagogical approaches to digital education and engaged learning. This role will work collaboratively with SSW faculty, project managers, and other team members to design and enhance SSW courses that meet shared expectations of innovation, rigor, quality, and learner engagement. By leading the instructional design process, the Learning Experience Designer role assists faculty in incorporating best practices, learning theories, and engagement techniques in the development of new courses and the transformation of existing courses.

    The ideal candidate for this position will have worked in a team environment, has experience in instructional design in higher education, has a passion for improving access to education and has a desire to explore and research how digital technologies can be used in residential, hybrid, and online settings to transform education. This role will work within a fast-paced environment to design and develop MOOCs, blended learning, and other digital education environments that are aimed at unlocking new educational opportunities and enabling personalized, engaged, and lifelong learning for the U-M community and learners around the world.

    Course Design
    · Collaborate on the design and evaluation of high-quality online and blended courses
    · Apply instructional design methods and learning theories to learner-centered course design
    · Lead SSW faculty collaborators through the instructional design process and ensure that the course
    · design, activities, and resources are appropriately aligned with course and SSW outcomes
    · Develop learning outcomes and learner personas for primary and secondary audiences
    · Map content and activities to support learner successfully meeting outcomes
    · Work with faculty to create engaging activities, assessments, interactions, and quizzes
    · Storyboard activities/animations when additional coding or graphics are required
    · Review and create instructional graphics to support learning and accessibility
    · Maintain documentation of course design decisions
    · Provide feedback on consistency and appropriateness of course content and presentation
    · Complete course design and accessibility checklists
    · Review course during production and implementation phase
    · Lead course iteration reviews

    Applied Research
    · Interview/survey SSW faculty and students to understand needs
    · Administer course demographic and satisfaction surveys
    · Analyze survey data and learning analytics data to inform course iteration
    · Stay current on research regarding learning theories, online tools, trends
    · Propose applied research

    Capacity Expansion
    · Contribute instructional design expertise through workshops for SSW faculty and staff
    · Contribute to developing design templates, checklists, guidelines for best practices
    · Contribute to growth and development of AI through U-M collaborations and innovation

    Experience working in higher education
    Master’s degree in educational theory, instructional design, educational technology, or related field with at least 5 years of experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
    Knowledge of assessing learning outcomes and project outcomes
    Strong organizational skills and ability to meet deadlines
    Demonstrated expertise in instructional design
    Demonstrated experience and interest in working in a team environment
    Passion for changing teaching and learning through technology
