    Luke Shaefer's New Research Reveals Stark Disparities in Rural Communities

    Where are the nation’s most disadvantaged communities? With funding from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Professor Luke Shaefer, a team of researchers from U-M Poverty Solutions and Princeton University explored this question and developed an Index of Deep Disadvantage to identify and better understand America’s most disadvantaged communities. By identifying communities of deep disadvantage can help direct resources where they’re most needed.

    Professor Luke Shaefer has been appointed special counselor to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services on anti-poverty and economic mobility initiatives. His role is advising and facilitating discussion on anti-poverty policy.

"Coming up with money to pay utilities is a matter of having money. Having money means a job — and not just any job, but a decent paying one," said Shaefer.

    Luke Shaefer Quoted in The Washington Post

    Luke Shaefer, Professor of Social Work and director of Poverty Solutions, and his co-authors study on material hardships among seniors and children was cited in a recent Washington Post article. Shaefer said about their study "“one of the major takeaways is how incredibly important Social Security is in the retirement security of low- and moderate-income households.”

    Associate Professor of Social Work and Poverty Solutions Director, Luke Shaefer, said Congress should keep the earned-income tax credit as a work inducement and include a separate plan to help those who have fallen out of the labor market.

    Luke Shaefer Receives U-M Faculty Recognition Award

    Associate Professor Luke Shaefer will receive a Faculty Recognition Award on October 3 from the University of Michigan. Bestowed every fall by the Rackham Graduate School, the Faculty Recognition Award recognizes mid-career faculty who have made remarkable contributions to the University through scholarly research; excellence as teachers, advisors and mentors; and distinguished service.

    Luke Shaefer is Appointed to the Commission on Community Action and Economic Opportunity

    Associate Professor Luke Shaefer was appointed to the commission on Community Action and Economic Opportunity by Governor Rick Snyder. The 12-member commission is charged with reducing the causes, conditions and effects of poverty and promoting social and economic opportunities that foster self-sufficiency for low-income people.
