Associate Professor Daphne Watkins won two of the four awards presented at the University of Michigan Fast Forward Medical Innovations (FFMI) program on November 17, 2017.
Watkins, who competed among 15 teams of physicians and medical professionals, is the principal investigator for the YBMen Project, which was created to better understand and address the pressures and needs of young black men using popular social media platforms to provide mental health education and social support. Watkins won the Health IT category, and the Crowd Favorite category.
“The Medical Innovations program is a great way to learn how to grow ideas and make good use of customer discovery,” Watkins said. “These awards are an acknowledgement that the work we’re doing is useful and important. They are very encouraging.”
Watkins continues to write grants to evaluate the YBMen Project and make it scalable and sustainable.
Vincent Fusaro, PhD'17 is the recipient of the 2018 Society for Social Work and Research Outstanding Social Work Doctoral Dissertation Award for his dissertation entitled "The Spirit of '96: States & the Implementation of Temporary Assistance for Needy Families."
The Child and Adolescent Data Lab's article, "Disparities at Adjudication in the Juvenile Justice System: An Examination of Race, Gender, and Age" was published in Social Work Research. The lab includes PhD student Michael Evangelist, Associate Professors Joe Ryan and Brian Perron, research associate Bryan Victor, and data analyst Andrew Moore.
Associate Professors Andy Grogan-Kaylor and Shawna Lee’s spanking research was featured in U.S. News & World Report and the November 2017 issue of Michigan Research.
Associate Professor Shawna Lee received a grant from the Michigan Health Endowment Fund for a project entitled, "Promoting Infant Health and Wellbeing by Engaging Fathers." This project involves implementing and evaluating a fatherhood home visitation and parent education intervention with low-income fathers in collaboration with 6 Healthy Start home visitation sites in Michigan.
Associate Dean for Research and Professor Joe Himle and Associate Professor Andy Grogan-Kaylor’s article, “Social Aspects of the Workplace Among Individuals With Bipolar Disorder” was published in the Journal of the Society for Social Work and Research.
Associate Dean for Research and Professor Joe Himle’s article, “Quality of life in anxious adolescents” was published in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Mental Health.
Research Administration Coordinator Carrie Disney was selected to receive a 2017 Research Administrator Recognition Award from the U-M Office of Research. The award honors staff members for important contributions to the University’s research mission through exceptional performance and by going beyond the ordinary fulfillment of position duties.
Carrie Disney, Research Process Coordinator and Scott Stanfill, Research Services Manager have completed and passed the certified research administrators exam. The exam is managed by the Research Administrators Certification Council an independent professional organization. The core content for the certificate emphasizes: leadership development, research administration, research and faculty development, innovation, economic development, integrity and stewardship. There are 20 Certified Research Administrators (CRA) on the three U-M campuses, SSW has 10% of U-M's CRAs.
Professor Dan Saunders and Professor Emerita Kathleen Faller recently published "The Need to Carefully Screen for Family Violence When Parental Alienation is Claimed" in the Family Law Journal.
