    Curtis Center Program Evaluation Group Staff and Students Present at American Evaluation Association Conference

    Evaluation Associates and students from the Curtis Center Program Evaluation Group presented at the American Evaluation Association national conference in Chicago, IL on November 11-14, 2015, including three poster presentations and three oral presentations.

    Oral presentations included:

    • Intentionally Developing Skills and Competencies in New Evaluators: The Tier Approach. Presenters: Laura Sundstrom, MSW, and Megan Elyse Williams, MSW (Evaluation Associates)
    • Using the Social Work Approach to Enhance Evaluation Practice. Presenters: Megan Elyse Williams, MSW, and Laura Sundstrom, MSW (Evaluation Associates)

    Poster presentations included:

    • College Access and Social Anxiety: How Evaluation Results Led to Targeted Curriculum Redesign. Authors: Sue Ann Savas, MSW; Laura Sundstrom, MSW (Evaluation Associate); Sue Schooner, MBA (client); and Natalya Wawrin, MSW (former field student)
    • Data Automation 101: A step-by-step approach to effeciently handing multi-stide evaluation data. Authors: Sue Ann Savas, MSW; Megan Elyse Williams, MSW (Evaluation Associate); Meredith Philyaw, MS (Evaluation Associate); and Jennifer Nulty, MSW Candidate (current work study student)
    • Evaluating a Human Trafficking Course Diversion Program: Building Knowledge to Better Serve Victims of Human Trafficking. Authors: Sue Ann Savas, MSW; Laura Sundstrom, MSW (Evaluation Associate); Chad Jobin, LLMSW (Evaluation Associate); Mary O'Brien, MSW Candidate (current work study student); and Cainnear Hogan, MSW Candidate (current work study and special studies student)

    Laura Sundstrom and Megan Elyse Williams (Evaluation Associates) also participated on a panel discussion entitled, "Strategies for Teaching and Enhancing Cultural Competence in Novice Evaluators."

    Youth Impact Program

    The School of Social Work offers Masters in Social Work students a variety of field placements (internships) where students put their classroom knowledge into practice, gain hands-on experience in the real world, and see first-hand the impact of social work.

    Five alumni honored with SSW Distinguished Alumni Awards

    Five School of Social Work alumni were presented Distinguished Alumni Awards at the SSW All Class Reunion Lunch on Friday, October 31, 2014. 

    The Distinguished Alumni Award recognizes School of Social Work alumni whose achievements exemplify the values of the School of Social Work and who have made an exceptional impact on the profession, the community and/or Social Work education.

    The Delicate Dance: University and community members learn about the intersection of philanthropy and evaluation

    On Friday, December 5, 2014, the Curtis Center Program Evaluation Group convened a panel to talk with the University and the community about the delicate dance between evaluation and philanthropy.  In total, over 70 people were in attendance, including students and faculty from the School of Social Work, members of the University community, representatives from foundations, consumers of evaluation, and professional evaluators.  The conversation was facilitated and moderated by John Tropman, PhD, Professor of Social work.  Panelists included Harlene Appelman, Executive Director of Covenant Foundation; Rob Collier, President & CEO of Council on Michigan Foundations; Jane Fran Morgan, JFM Consulting; and Pam Smith, President and United Way of Wasthenaw County.

    David Cordova's Team Awarded First Place Poster from Michigan Institute for Clinical and Health Research


    Assistant Professor David Cordova and a team of SSW alumni and MSW students including Laura Alexander (MSW) and alumni Kate Guzman, Caitlin Martin and Craig VanKempen, received first place for their poster entitled, "Here for Youth: Developing and Mobilizing a Community Advisory Board to Assess and Improve Mental Health Services for Adolescents". Their research was presented at the 2014 Outreach, Partnerships & Implementation Science at the Michigan Institute for Clinical & Health Research symposium.

    Laura De Palma (MSW Student) Writes Blog for Huffington Post

    MSW Candidate, Laura M. De Palma wrote a blog post for the Huffington Post about The James and Grace Lee Boggs School, a new community-based school on Detroit's east side. She highlights the ways in which the school is creating a community which carries out Dr. Martin Luther King's visions.

    Curtis Center Program Evaluation Group Announces First Place-Based Evaluation Fellowship

    The Curtis Center Program Evaluation Group (CC-PEG) received a grant from the New York Community Trust to improve the macro social work profesion.  The awarded Place-Based Evaluation (PBE) Fellowship project was developed to better understand the needs and challenges related to building internal evaluation capacity within non-profit organizations.  The project will place three (3) PBE Fellows into community-based non-profit organizations in southeast Michigan for 20 hours per week for a period of eight (8) months.

    The aims of the PBE Fellowship are to: (1) provide recent MSW graduates with the skills and experience necessary to work as professional evaluators in the field of social work; (2) provide communtiy-based non-profit organizations with quality evaluation services at a reduced cost; and (3) build and test the internal capacity for evaluation at each organization.

    CC-PEG is happy to announce the selection of the PBE Fellows and non-profit organizations they will be placed in:

    • Phylicia Allen, MSW, will be placed at Detroit Parent Network
    • Ashley Eason, MSW, will be placed at Detroit Police Athletic League
    • Lauren Emerson, MSW, will be placed at SOS Community Services in Ypsilanti

    Sue Ann Savas Presents at APPAM National Conference

    Assistant Clinical Professor Sue Ann Savas presented on a panel titled "Innovative Approaches to Child Support Enforcement: Evidence from Field Research" at the Association for Public Policy Analysis & Management (APPAM) 35th Annual Fall Research Conference on November 9, 2013.  Sue Ann Savas and Jeremy Gaertner, MSW presented on the Re-tooling Michigan's Child Support Enforcement Program project in conjuction with representatives from Washington and Iowa who received the same grant from the Office of Child Support Enforcement (DHHS).

    The APPAM Fall Research Conference was held in Washington, DC from November 7-9, 2013.

    Curtis Center Program Evaluation Group Presents at American Evaluation Association Conference

    The Curtis Center Program Evaluation Group presented twice at the American Evaluation Association national conference in Washington, DC on October 16-19.

    Staff member Laura Sundstrom and MSW/MPH student Nick Yankey presented on a panel titled "Creating Infrastructure for Experiential Learning and Practical Skill Development for Novice Evaluators" on the implementation of and experience with the Curtis Center Program Evaluation Group.

    Staff members Jeremy Gaertner and Desiree Liwosz presented a poster titled "Re-tooling Michigan's Child Support Enforcement: Using Predictive Modeling and Supportive Methods in Michigan's Child Support System to Increase the Financial Well-being of Children and Self-Sufficiency of Families" on the progress and preliminary results from the Re-tooling Michigan's Child Support Enforcement Program project through the Curtis Center Program Evaluation Group.

    Lena Le and Robert Siporin, MSW candidates, awarded University of Michigan NASW Student Social Worker 2013

    Lena Le and Robert (Bobby) Siporin, MSW candidates, were awarded the University of Michigan NASW Student Social Worker 2013. Both students have demonstrated leadership qualities, academic excellence and a commitment to political or community action.
