Tina Jiwatram-Negron (Curtis Center postdoctoral fellow) and Associate Dean for Research and Professor Joe Himle received a grant from the U-M SSW via the Curtis Research and Training Center for their New York City-based study which will develop and test an integrated, brief screening for a previously identified syndemic of intimate partner violence, HIV/STIs, substance use, and depression/self-harm among Hispanic/Latino women in the U.S.
Professor William Elliott III and Assistant Professor Kristin Seefeldt received a grant from the Lilly Endowment Inc. via the Wabash County Young Men's Christian Association Inc. (Indiana) to examine the impact of providing financial awards based on learning, college planning, and savings behaviors on academic achievement and school attendance.
Assistant Professor Cristina Bares’ article, “Nicotine dependence, internalizing symptoms, mood variability and daily tobacco use among young adult smokers” was published in Addictive Behaviors.

Clinical Assistant Professor Deb Mattison received a 2017 Demonstration Model Award from the Midwest Interprofessional Practice, Education, and Research Center, a multi-institution coalition dedicated to incorporating interprofessional health practice with education in the Midwest region. She created the IPE Course Adapter Toolkit, a web-based resource that serves as a “one-stop shop” for instructors interested in converting their existing courses to interprofessional offerings.
Sara Stein (PhD student) and Associate Professor Andy Grogan-Kaylor’s article, “Profiles of Children's Thinking About Violence in Families Exposed to Intimate Partner Violence” was published in the Journal of Child and Family Studies.
LEO Lecturer Tony Alvarez was selected to give the Kurt Hahn Address at the 2017 Association for Experiential Education Conference this November in Montreal.
Professor William Elliott III and Assistant Professor Kristin Seefeldt received a grant from the John T. Gorman Foundation via the Alfond Scholarship Foundation to provide a systematic and objective evaluation of its Children's Savings Account CSAs program, called the Harold Alfond College Challenge ("HACC"). As the first CSA to shift to opt-out enrollment for a universal, statewide 529 college savings plan, this research will evaluate whether or not HACC is having a positive effect on children, families, and the communities.
