    Luke Shaefer Receives U-M Faculty Recognition Award

    Associate Professor Luke Shaefer will receive a Faculty Recognition Award on October 3 from the University of Michigan. Bestowed every fall by the Rackham Graduate School, the Faculty Recognition Award recognizes mid-career faculty who have made remarkable contributions to the University through scholarly research; excellence as teachers, advisors and mentors; and distinguished service.

    Poverty Solutions and Luke Shaefer Partner with Harvard to Reduce Poverty in Detroit

    The University of Michigan and Harvard University are forming a partnership to spur economic mobility and reduce poverty in Detroit. The Equality of Opportunity Project — led by Harvard faculty members Raj Chetty and Nathaniel Hendren and Brown University’s John Friedman — will work with U-M’s Poverty Solutions initiative, led by Associate Professor and Poverty Solutions Director, Luke Shaefer.

    Center on Assets, Education and Inclusion Receives Funding from the Friedman Family Foundation

    Professor William Elliot received funding from the Friedman Family Foundation to support the Center on Assets, Education, and Inclusion. The center creates and studies innovations related to asset development, education and financial inclusion that result in opportunities across the life course for low-income children and families.

    YBMen Project Expanding to Detroit

    Associate Professor Daphne Watkins was awarded a grant from the My Brother's Keeper Detroit Innovation Challenge to launch a Young Black Men, Masculinities, and Mental Health (YBMen) Project for adolescents and young adults in Detroit.

    Harvard Magazine Highlights the Work of Luke Shaefer and Poverty Solutions

    Harvard Magazine features U-M’s Poverty Solutions, including the work of Associate Professor Luke Shafer. The article discusses Poverty Solutions’ funded work with the Detroit Partnership on Economic Mobility

  6. Joseph P. Ryan
     
    Joesph Ryan Advises Governor Snyder on Juvenile Justice

    Professor Joseph Ryan has a long history working on juvenile justice matters and using data to help drive better policy. He advises the governor as a member of the Michigan Committee on Juvenile Justice. He’s also co-director of the Child and Adolescent Data Lab, a research center focused on using data to drive policy and practice decisions in the field. His work was recently highlighted by the University of Michigan Public Engagement and Impact project.

    Jamie Mitchell 2018 Influencer in Aging

    Assistant Professor Jamie Mitchell has been selected as a 2018 Influencer in Aging for her dedication to improving the experiences older African-American men have within the health care system.

  8. Barry N. Checkoway
     
    Barry Checkoway Prepares a New Generation of Civil Rights Leaders

    Professor Barry Checkoway received a grant from the University of Michigan Provost - Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. His funded project will prepare a new generation of civil rights leaders in ways that provide pathways into higher education for everyone, with special emphasis on first generation, low income and students of color.

    Edie Kieffer and Brandy Sinco Win Second Place at the Community Health Institute EXPO

    Professor Edie Kieffer and Research Associate Brandy Sinco won second place at the Community Health Institute EXPO in Orlando, FL for their co-authored poster, "Integrating Community Health Workers into Interdisciplinary Healthcare Teams in a Federally Qualified Health Center: Patients’ and Providers’ Perspectives and Preliminary Outcomes." The poster was a highlight within the “Expanding Access to Care and Other Services for Special Populations” category at the Expo representing the largest annual gath­er­ing of health cen­ter clin­i­cians, exec­u­tives and con­sumer board mem­bers.

    William Elliott Guest Author for Prosperity Now

    Professor William Elliott was featured as a guest author for an article in Prosperity Now, a Washington DC nonprofit organization advocating to ensure that all Americans have a clear path to financial stability, wealth and prosperity.
